Bell House is a slight work--10 tracks in about 23 minutes--but its songs feel sturdy, as if they’re anchored by DIY ethos and a solid rhythm section.

Even the hazier songs have a melodic and harmonic allure, though, a trait that bodes well for any band. With ten tracks coming in at under 25 minutes, Bell House almost goes by too fast for its richness, like sample-sized bakery treats that deserve a full course.

When they push the boat out and go prog on the lengthy title track (which clocks in at a wildly indulgent near-four-minutes) the effect is one of ethereal loveliness, a lysergic suspension of normalcy as the band’s warming lo-fi offers a moment of transportation.

For a short album--only ten tracks in 24 minutes--it doesn't take long to recognize the beauty of Bell House.

On Bell House, it’s sometimes hard to tell when the band is being too precious and when it’s consciously using self-deprecating humor to subvert that self-seriousness.

Bell House covers many musical facets, both old and new, but what it truly showcases is Shy Boys' growth and malleability as songwriters.

While the subdued vocal harmonies are a minimal draw, they are often out of tune. In fact there's no need to bother with this album unless you like harmless, predictable, and formulaic adult contemporary fluff-rock.
