A 19-track behemoth of (mainly) Sun Records covers, executed so faithfully that they could have been mouldering in a Memphis vault for 50 years.
  2. BTS is a covers album recorded at and paying tribute to Memphis's Sun Studios, deploying tumbleweed guitar twang, and occasionally, the falsetto.

It's hardly a novel idea to cover these songs, but Isaak's versions succeed through skilful arrangement, vibrant recording (mostly at Sun) and above all some remarkable vocal performances.

Beyond the Sun is just an incredibly fun album--one that every fan of blues, country, and rock should embrace with glee.

Isaak has somehow managed to make the homage almost as enjoyable as the originals. Almost.

Isaak spends his homage to pioneering label Sun records lighting his firecracker of a backing band and getting out of the way. [28 Oct 2011, p.73]

Beyond the Sun plays it cool and plays it authentic--these aren't reinterpretations, but sincere homages--and if this doesn't have much grit, it has plenty of style and heart.

If you like Isaak you're probably already a fan of some of his idols, and nothing here outdoes the originals (and certainly even he knows nothing could). So even though Beyond the Sun isn't strictly necessary, it's great balls of fun.
