Bodies is one of the stronger offerings from AFI's late era, stirring both the physical and emotional with urgency and heart.

In fully embracing theatrics, their new wave leanings, and the unquestionable punk legacy, the band have landed on a sound both contemporary and unmistakably theirs.

An elegant set of sweeping rock anthems, not a rough edge to be found, and yet there' soul amid the aural perfection. [Jul 2021, p.85]

The band’s desire to suffuse their sound with new tones and textures is admirable and frequently pays dividends, but there are moments when that drive to evolve leads them to either cleave too close to other bands or stray too far from their own fundamentals.

Bodies is a well put together album that will appease hungry fans, but it's not the injection of life that AFI so desperately needs at this stage of its career.

Ultimately, it feels like too much is crammed in and AFI can't tell if they want to go pop, goth, retro or symphonic. And with something that schizophrenic, it undercuts a lot of what could have been diamonds in the rough.

With Bodies, they sound lost without an identity. There's barely anything that's exciting or memorable, and when it surprises, it's only in the wrong ways. The band sounds about 30 years less experienced than they are.

It felt like they were stuck retreading themselves the past few albums and with this one they finally found a new sound. Its probably their most varied sounding record, while still managing to have a cohesive theme throughout. Expand

Considering that even their early work was very influenced by a darker new wave sound, it's maybe not a surprise to hear this direction. It's unmistakably AFI, and the songs pop with creativity and emotion. Perhaps their most conscious stylistic change since Sing the Sorrow, and the production quality just pops. Adam Carson's drumming shines especially. Expand

The music is bland and overproduced and the lyrics sound like they were written by a 15 year old. Sad thing is i actually enjoyed the last record. But Bodies is truly terrible. Expand
