There are a couple of tracks that veer rather too close for comfort to boy band and eurovision territory, but for the most part, assuming you like the better end of synth-pop, you won’t be disappointed.

The minuses overwhelm the pluses, however, and the rampant mediocrity takes care of the rest.

They still know their way around a pretty tune, though, and they still understand the value of smart sweetness. [#361, p.112]

Polished but pedestrian. [Jul 2016, p.78]

Nothing on Breakin' Point really hits as hard as their earlier work. Peter Bjorn and John are having fun on this album, but occasionally get a little lost in the dance moves.

[“Hard Sleep”] stands out as a rare home-run on an album too blandly ambitious to stick in the memory.

Yes, all the songs are nice and pretty, but there's something missing. It could be that in 2016 there's palpable nostalgia for mid-2000s indie rock (see Wolf Parade reunion tour). But it's the actual music from a decade ago that fans are yearning for, not necessarily the newest versions of the bands themselves.

Breakin' Point feels like a pop record designed by a committee.
