Keeping up with Children of Alice's quicksilver changes and hypnotic passages requires listeners' full attention, but it's well worth it--these ever-transforming soundworlds honor the magic that Broadcast tapped into with Keenan while suggesting an equally fascinating way forward.

A strange, lovely and at times genuinely unnerving album that feels like a deep-dive into the subconscious of these hauntology pioneers.

It takes a while for these disparate facets to show themselves fully, but the resultant experience is a trawl into an underworld totally removed from collective consciousness views of tradition, fate and religiosity. It’s a dark path, but one well worth taking, provided you have something to ease the headache when you come back.

Children of Alice is different from its predecessors. Its nostalgia feels less escapist than therapeutic, and its composure amid the mundane and deranged is more of a promotion for mindfulness.

There’s a strong sense on Children Of Alice of each member of the trio’s strengths--Cargill’s ear for synth sounds and eerie melodies; Roj’s rippling tone patterns and rhythmic momentum; House’s collages glued together from the subconscious--both coexisting and combining into a greater whole. Yet its threefold approach to listeners’ minds--as, simultaneously, musique concrète sonic buffet, richly nostalgic hotpot of beloved reference points, and hieroglyphic recipe book--is less cohesive. The struggle and challenge presented here is worthy our attention if not for pleasure’s sake alone, but for the varied breadth of emotion that each mini soundtrack evokes.

Having scampered down the rabbit hole, COA seem hopelessly confused--and all the better for it. [Apr 2017, p.25]

At times, the album suffers from sounding like the aural equivalent of the cut-up technique, dissecting and rearranging sounds for no discernible purpose other than momentary intrigue. Given enough space to fully unfold, however, Children of Alice becomes a fascinating entry from three invaluable innovators in indie electronic music.
