Earthling plants itself firmly in this moment, a trial-and-error soundtrack to one man’s maturation.

On a strictly musical basis, Earthling is the most varied project Eddie Vedder has ever released, and it's also his lightest album: there's a palpable joy to his free experiments here that's infectious, even fun.

Earthling gives an uplifting sense of the creative energy shared between Eddie Vedder and his keenly empathetic collaborators, distilled into striking, memorable songs, and unified by a fresh, cohesive sound. On this evidence, it’s to be hoped the partnership forges ahead as the day jobs allow.

Throughout, Earthling toys with classic radio-rock clichés, only to cleanse them of jadedness via Vedder's trademark wholehearted investment, a trick which still charms. [Apr 2022, p.88]

This is a record that plays like Eddie’s soul is plugged directly into a jukebox skipping through different eras of music history.

Earthling suggests Vedder can remain earthbound after all. Figure it’s his best yet.

It’s his most revealing solo release, since, musically, it feels more like the Vedder we’ve known for 30 years and not a purposeful departure from Pearl Jam.

Vedder has been open about his struggles with mental health and he seems to be in a very positive place with this record, expressing himself as his love for classic rock comes to the forefront on Earthling.

Vedder has never been shy about naming his influences, and here they form a buoyant cloud lifting the enterprise up among the stars.

An altogether less whimsical - and much more Pearl Jam-esque - undertaking than 2011's Ukulele Songs. [Apr 2022, p.36]

It's strident without being brash, starry without being pompous, middle of the road without being bland. [Mar 2022, p.84]

He’s lither; he sings with a spring in his step, trusting the deepened range of his indignant burr. After several Pearl Jam albums of material pounded into meat sauce, the airier delights of Earthling’s end run let Vedder stretch—cautiously.

Feels like Eddie tries to move forward, that's great.
But as for me, the album seems too eclectic.

I hear the very definition of Dad rock. Not much that has the energy, anger, vulnerability or creativity of Eddie Vedder's best. Maybe it's just a bad album - or maybe it's finally time to retire. At this rate, he'll be playing the casino circuit before long. Full Review »

Appropriately soaring and bombastic musically to complement Vedder's frequently sky/stargazing lyrics, "Earthling" still can't hold a candleAppropriately soaring and bombastic musically to complement Vedder's frequently sky/stargazing lyrics, "Earthling" still can't hold a candle to the Pearl Jam frontman's best work with his main group but is certainly his most accomplished solo effort to date, with reliably powerful vocals, solid songwriting and an intriguing alt-glam sonic profile all adding up to form a strong, enjoyable listen.
