  • Summary: Rhymefest, the Chicago rapper who co-wrote Kanye West's hit "Jesus Walks," releases his second studio album featuring guest appearances by Little Brother, Saigon, Glenn Lewis, and Darien Brockington.
Score distribution:
  1. Positive: 7 out of 8
  2. Negative: 0 out of 8
  1. For all its missteps, El Che finds a satisfying combination of humor and heart, pop savvy and boom-bap, playfulness and ambition, strength and vulnerability.
  2. 80
On "Talk My Shit" and the hilarious "Truth on You," bitter jabs are never far from self-deprecating punch lines, and the beats--while likely less expensive--are still brash and booming.
  3. It's hard to imagine Che having that kind of hate when he makes music so many people can love and appreciate, and while El Che doesn't exceed the standard he set with his debut you'll enjoy this CD too.
  4. The production feels refreshingly raw, but the pop sweetening--mostly in the R&B-style choruses and backing vocal tracks--is distracting. Still, this intriguing hodgepodge affirms Rhymefest as a hip-hop eccentric who dreams big.
  5. He may remind listeners of this achievement a little too much during his second album, El Che, but luckily there's enough fresh material to balance it out
  6. While Rhymefest is a rock-solid rapper--this is the guy who once beat Eminem in Scribble Jam, after all--he also blunts his own impact with corny jokes.
  7. El Che lacks anything that could be considered fresh or exciting in 2010; it sounds five years late and suffers for it, especially when Rhymefest is noticeably less interesting than he was last decade.
