She’s at her most arresting in A Little Song, where her piano echoes John Cale’s version of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah and her exquisite idyll is gradually penetrated by an industrial noise, perhaps a signifier of harsher truths or realities--or the modern world.

Faithful Fairy Harmonies often sounds like a song hunter’s discovery, a forgotten cache of preindustrial songs left behind on wax cylinders in someone’s dusty attic. Yet there’s something very modern about the idea of Josephine Foster being able to create this work almost entirely on her own and driven solely by her own artistic preferences. An old-fashioned voice singing exactly what it wants is not old fashioned at all.

The mysteries of love, life, and the world are broached with a light yet nevertheless unshakeable touch on Faithful Fairy Harmony. Foster has made a record that feels like a psychic connection to inner worlds as well as an outer one, and the visions she summons are at once vivid and rarified.

Foster's is an oddly moving, crepuscular and dream-like world to get happily lost in. [Jan 2018, p.91

Lyrically, Foster possesses both esoteric wisdom and an ascetic purity yet never wanders out of reach; she has the musical instinct of her troubadour sisterhood (Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Judee Sill et al) and in the spoken word moments, the cosmic gravitas of Eden Ahbez. [Dec 2018, p.48]

Foster uses her dazzling vocals and adroit musicality to explore the depth of musical culture while showcasing her copious talent. Faithful Fairy Harmony will certainly carry listeners to a far-off fairytale realm.

The outer skein of mystical mystery shelters a clutch of slyly insistent melodies. [Jan 2019, p.21]
