At times sublime, at others sinister, the music captures the feel of an untamed landscape where natural beauty lurks within, and menace approaches.

Flesh and Machine‘s live performances may belong to the night, but the sensations stirred through listening to the album will linger for far longer.

It might seem like faint praise to call Flesh & Machine Lanois’ best and most realized solo album, but it’s also one of the best ambient records of 2014--an endlessly inventive collection of songs built on odd, often lurid sounds and textures, somehow rough and gentle at the same time.

Once you get through "The End" (which is actually near the beginning)--with a barrage of cymbals care of Brian Blade--Flesh And Machine is a relatively subdued affair.
  5. Nov 3, 2014

Flesh And Machine is a record made with an abundance of indulgence; a collection of sounds that requires cynicism--and hopes for instant gratification--to be checked at the door.

This kind of work doesn't make for an album which one is inclined to return to for repeated listening.

Flesh is musical, but also minimal, a soothing pink noise that won't put you to sleep or interfere with your daydreams. [No. 116, p.59]
