Ghostface Killahs won’t shake up the current Hip Hop ecosystem but does offer a gritty detour down those commercial highways. But longtime fans could argue the project is his strongest since 2006’s Fishscale.

The album seems somewhat patched-together compared to other Ghostface albums, but it still boasts some excellent tracks. The main problem is the blatantly homophobic and misogynistic lyrics which crop up throughout. Not that this is anything new, or unexpected, but it still mars an otherwise strong album.

“Ghostface Killahs” gives you glimpses of Ghostface Killah at his best but it’s difficult to say it stands up against his last few albums. As solid as the production is, it’s not quite as good as Caiazzo’s work on “Chamber No. 9” and the highlights are often short blasts of magic that actually stick to the album’s theme.

Ghostface Killahs is marred by too many tracks that are either curdled by casual cruelty or just tired retreads.
