Just Mustard have said they wanted their second album, Heart Under, to make the listener feel like they are driving through a tunnel with the windows down. And on this noisy, wonderfully chaotic record, the band seems to have nailed it. ... The inventive beats make you want to dance.

A truly unique gem. ... The band have said they want ‘Heart Under’ to feel like the experience of driving through a tunnel with the windows down. Through deliciously inventive musicianship they’ve created something even more thrilling.

It's easy to get sucked into darkness and despair, Heart Under proves that so, but thankfully, Ball's voice oversees that listeners only merely toe into these bottomless, murky waters.

Swampy and tumultuous like a month’s worth of rain, the Dundalk five-piece have spared no expense in creating immersive, cavernous spaces of shoegazing, post-punk splendour.

Heart Under is simultaneously ghostly and glorious, a wretched yet emancipatory tornado of distorted dissonance that places the band among the vanguard of the British Isles’ ever-crowded post-punk scene.

The wicked atmosphere that they’ve crafted across Heart Under is worthy of celebration alone.

One of Just Mustard’s strengths is that no single strength attempts to outshine the others. David Noonan’s and Mete Kalyoncuoglu’s guitars don’t shred or solo, they swarm and swirl. Robert Hodgers Clarke’s undertowing bass lines rattle the foundations that Shane Maguire’s insistent drumming create.

Heart Under thrums with menace, a glint of teeth always on display yet never fully bared. Heart Under is an album rooted in anticipation: Just Mustard know it’s the glimmer of danger that’s most enthralling of all.

Heart Under is an ear-piercing piece of intuitively crafted work.

A striking, fantastically original work, this is an album that taps into animalistic emotion.

Rather than holding up a torch, Heart Under adjusts your eyes to the pitch black.

Sounds like Portishead, My Bloody Valentine and PJ Harvey, tense and sonically interesting.

Reminds me of the music I listened to when I was in my Goth phase in high school. However, unlike that music, I am down for more listens. Full Review »

For me, the uniformity of the style, especially the vocals, begin to drag by the end of the tracklist. For others, this cohesion will be a plus if the style is more your thing.

I probably won't listen to this regularly, but I recommend everyone gives it a listen because it succeeds at what it's going for.
