Heroes may be elegiac, but it's as spirited as it is poignant. [Jun 2012, p.70]

It's a heroic effort all around.
  3. I decided that Lukas's stoned-hillbilly affect was just what his dad needed to distinguish this particular assortment of what-thes, why-hasn't-he-evers, and written-to-orders from rival entries in his unchartable catalogue.

Nelson's voice is the shining star on this album, and that feels like the only thing that matters.

The playing is lovely, lilting and delicate.

The music on Heroes is less diverse than Nelson's tastes suggest--it's all country lite--but there's a real warmth in his work with his kids.

Heroes indicates that the future is in good hands.

If anyone asks how Heroes differs from the 65 Willie Nelson studio albums that preceded it, the happy answer is: not much. The expressive, intimate tenor, the matchless musical instinct and Willie's distinctive ringing guitar lines are just as compelling, and just as delightful, as ever.

Dig deeper into Heroes and you might find a newfound respect for the aging outlaw.

Maybe not vintage Willie, but entertaining enough. [Jul 2012, p.107]

[Nelson] moves effortlessly from pop country balladry to well-heated Western Swing. [Jul 2012, p.94]

While Heroes adds some essential songs to his canon and certainly doesn't diminish his legacy, it ultimately lacks enough of what makes Willie Nelson albums so enjoyable: Willie Nelson himself.

Heroes isn't in that league, [with albums, "Teatro" or "Songbird"] but in its best moments it shows that he's still able to reach, if not necessarily sustain, those dazzling heights.

Makes you long for more Willie, less Willie and Friends.

He excellently lends Coldplay's 'The Scientist' a terse fragility, but less successful is a sanitised, Sheryl Crow-featuring version of Tom Waits' 'Come On Up To The House'.

As usual, guests crowd the album... less welcome, though, is the way that vast tranches of the album serve as a showcase for Willie's son, Lukas.

An appealingly misshapen collection of classics, contemporaries, and originals.
  18. 60
Offering up a populist mix of original compositions, covers of cowboy classics and contemporary songs in equal measure. This frequently ends up frustrating.

Inconsistency and lack of focus mars Heroes, which relies too heavily on misguided collaborations that don't add anything of value to the album.
