None of them are as immediately catchy or memorable, and perhaps that’s to be expected. But Petty and Co. are at ease and doing what they please.

Hypnotic Eye is little more than a decent record with a few ideas above its station.

Although it’s easy to lament the fact that Petty and the Heartbreakers don’t vary all that much from their usual template. Hypnotic Eye also affirms the fact they remain an austere and unapologetic outfit.

Hypnotic Eye mostly returns to their earliest days of razor-edged guitars and garage rock.... The listless You Get Me High and Burnt Out Town's clunky blues may let the side down, but it feels good to finally have the real Heartbreakers back. [Aug 2014, p.94]

The songwriting is solid, the musicianship familiarly old-school, and while Hypnotic Eye lacks the killer standout tracks he turned out by the truckload in his youth, it packs enough vim and energy to suggest the fire is far from out.

Ranked alongside the Heartbreakers’ back catalog, their 13th falls somewhere in the middle. As a measuring of the fire inside Petty, however, readings are strong. Listening to Hypnotic Eye, you can rest assured he’s still kicking.

Personally, I enjoyed his 2010 release of "Mojo", but I did hope for a more rock sounding direction on his next album. I was not disappointed. Hypnotic Eye is full of energy, great lyrics, and stand out songs. The album sounds a lot like their first couple of albums, as well as the 2008 Mudcrutch release. Mike Campbell, guitarist of the Heartbreakers, stands out here. Very impressed with this album, and it gets better with repeated listens, as there is a lot of musical and lyrical depth here. It is hard to believe that this is TP&HB first #1 album. Do yourself a favor and pick this one up and listen to it all the way through. Full Review »

This is the album Mojo should have been. They tried too hard to be jammy on that one, and this one has all the blues underpinning, but withThis is the album Mojo should have been. They tried too hard to be jammy on that one, and this one has all the blues underpinning, but with much better song-writing, inspired lyrics, and great punky energy from the band. Hypnotic Eye is a distinctive and inspired addition to their discography, every band's swan song should be as good as this. Full Review »
