It's abrasive, intense, and marvelous. Poppy, one of the most eclectic underground pop figures in today's music industry, is touching her new peak on I Disagree. If a few songs are total misses, the vast majority of the LP is a total hit. From the angelic Concrete to the haunting Sick of the Sun, we see her shining brighter - or darker - than ever before.

But she only manages to be partially and temporally interesting during this 35-minute record full of noise, digressions and unmastered subjects. Instrumentally and vocally, they (meaning she and the artists that accompany her) are very limited, even redundant. Engaging moments tend to become the most annoying ones. Instruments rage with the greatest indifference. I guess they all believed that her public image would have been sufficient to make 'I Disagree' its popularity. And the worst is that it worked in overall. Unfortunately, I am definitely not a fan of Poppy and everything she claims to have developed. I can recognize the fact that some puns and lines are deep and questioning but it can't erase the feeling of listening to a girl sadly lacking vitality and conviction. Expand

I really admire, I don't call this album really a metal album, it's more of dark pop influenced by metal, her voice suits this type of music, things I hated are the track listing I found it very messy

I like the way they contrast between a sweet and soft voice with aggressive and dark guitars, it is as if a big bad wolf is behind a rabbit protecting it. However, not all his songs are something that fills our ears musically speaking

This album explores new genres from her past music, being very upbeat pop, this new style has a very unique sound unlike any other artist, coming close to artists like Grimes and AViVA, this I definitely recommend the album if you like post-genre or nu metal type genres, some of my highlights from this project are (Grammy Nominated) BLOODMONEY, If It Bleeds, Don't Go Outside, and I Disagree

It seems Poppy, once an internet sensation formed from short YouTube clips displaying her almost deadpan but meme-able personality, has evolved into a fully realized musician on I Disagree. Admittedly, I didn't have the warmest welcome into Poppy's music. Her 2017 album "Poppy.Computer" wasn't winning me over with it's generic electro-pop sound. Moreover, the compelling internet persona Poppy honed didn't translate well into the sound of the album. Poppy's next album "Am I A Girl?" was almost like a complete 180 musically, crossing the worlds of electro-pop, dance-pop and at times a left hook in the tracklist with an edgy and heavy pop-metal fusion. With healthy features from Grimes and Diplo, the character of this album was potent and made for a more creative project, even if some songs were underwhelming. And it seems this album was an inevitable route as Poppy released the "Choke EP" back in 2019.

"I Disagree" takes the most heavy and eye-opening parts of "Am I A Girl?" and builds on it into her most relentless album yet with twists and turns around every corner. Starting with the 'tongue-in-cheek' "Concrete", where Poppy introduces the album with a set of lyrics depicting the edgy-ness that she intends to deliver on the rest of the tracks, stating "Bury me six feet deep / Cover me in concrete / Turn me into a street". There are some bright and colorful harmony passages molding in with Poppy blurting out "Chewy chewy, yummy yummy yummy" that give a sharp contrast to the trash metal guitars shredding the pre-chorus. The persistent heavy metal drumming during the lighter moments of the song keep the energy high while still giving an avid sense of the sugary pop that it seems Poppy is trying to either rid of or leave to the side with lyrics like "Some people like candy / some people like ice cream / But these lifeless flavors don't satisfy me" The build of this track also leaves a satisfying payout with the final leg of this track being as anthemic as it is. The next couple tracks really hone both the edgy and catchy side of the album, starting with the punk-ish attitude Poppy delivers on the title track while harmonizing over these chunky metal guitars. With the track "BLOODMONEY", Poppy starts to introduce the electro-industrial sides of the album that prevail for most of the album after this point. The absolutely crushing vocal performance and punchy drums crush just about everything else during the chorus. With "Anything Like Me", Poppy almost whispers the verses until distorted guitars and yelling background vocals crush the chorus. The song falls into an dreamy ballad with acoustic guitars and light drums until the catchy "You shouldn't be anything like me" chorus returns and closes the song. "Fill The Crown" is another highlight for me as the electronics starting the track has a soothing vibe to it. The electronics get a bit glitchy and turn into a brief breakbeat. This builds to the chorus co-sung by Marilyn Manson. At this point the song works really well with him and reminds me of something Manson would get his hands on. "Nothing I Need" serves as a cooldown cut as this is Poppy's prettier vocal performance on the record (without any switch-ups into a heavier section). "Sit/Stay" might be my favorite track on the record consisting of the most insane genre-fusions and consistent beat switches. The vocals on this track never bore me and have many different inflections. The heavy guitars are not lost on this track as they appear quite frequently. "Bite Your Teeth" is probably the most odd cut with the beat switch-ups going from chugging heavy metal guitars into some squeaky bits of electronic instrumentation. The song breaks down into the softer moment as many other tracks here already have, this time not much different, but the highlight of this track would be the high energy heavy metal guitars and the 'drone-y' finish to the song. "Sick of the Sun" is another dreamier cut like "Nothing I Need". It's a fine track but this time not all that interesting to me at this point in the album, as the closer is the next song. "Don't Go Outside" finishes the album in a better way I expected. I'm glad there is a genuine build to this track and not 6 minutes of beat switches and edgy but sweet lyrics. Even though Poppy is in character on this album, I feel there is a personal message Poppy wants to convey on this song and a couple others. The closing lyrics being "You can be anyone you want to be" kind of fits for Poppy and her persona as she has painted herself with being this unique individual for 5 years or so. I think Poppy will continue down this path of these metal-pop crossovers with more and more catchy songs.

It's been quite a while since an album has legitimately surprised me with it's choices and it's way of flow. I haven't heard anything like this in my experience and I'm delighted to find something of this degree of quality and interest.
I love it when an artist pulls off this kind of artistic development and I'm so glad that i chose this album to begin my music decade with, as a bold statement and forward thinking to the max in an attempt to forward the shifting industry into it's next form, I'm hoping for the best and I'm legitimately excited to see where this decade goes because as this album shows, the possibilities are absolutely endless. Poppy has reached another level, so far... this is her best work yet. I love the way she's not afraid on pushing herself harder on every album. She's in a constant change, a chameleon. To conclude, "I Disagree" is one of the most disorienting albums I have ever listened to, continues to innovate and juxtapose bubblegum pop and metal. It remains an intoxicating combination and I can not wait to see it live. A risky option for any artist that is mainly known for its pinky pop sound but, nevertheless, she has demonstated to be a fearless powerfull artist within the music industry. If the Grammys play right this year, this record must be nominated for at least one award.

Poppy still leans on her pop roots (and dubstep) to help compensate for her lack of ability to deliver the kind of heavier vocal style we associate with the genre, especially during the album's second-half where it loses a bit of steam, but it's done in a sort of tongue-in-cheek manner.

The lyrical content chronicles Poppy's evolution as an artist and her feelings in regards to whatever happened with that Titanic guy. Given that I have no prior knowledge of Poppy outside of this album, a lot of that was lost on me. Yet, I did not once fail to see how empowering the messages of self-discovery and escaping toxic relationships are. All of this may be about Poppy's personal journey, but the things she(?) has learned can resonate with all of us.

The only problem with the album is really that second-half. With the exception of "Bite Your Teeth," everything after the fifth track kind of feels like filler. It is where Poppy is at her most emotional though, dealing with themes like depression. It's also hard to fault the concluding track "Don't Go Outside" which plays out like a classic rock ballad. So while the latter portion of these songs might not be to my taste, I'm overall not going to be too hard on the package as a whole.

It's such an atypical move for a musician to branch off into a less popular genre like this and I applaud the bravery. Not only are the results exciting and fantastic, but the decision has allowed to Poppy to express her voice in a more authentic manner while serving as a nice bridge between two different worlds of music. Whether or not this change sticks, I Disagree has made it so Poppy will always have my respect and I will be listening to many of its tracks for years to come.

i love rock poppy. this album is fun, thrilling, blood rushing and energizing. i do not usually listen to rock music/ metal music but there’s something about poppy’s music that is so alluring and catchy, to the point i can’t peel my eyes away from it. the skillful and frenzied guitar riffs, liberating vocals chanting with rebellious energy, chaotic and twisted screams and the prominenti love rock poppy. this album is fun, thrilling, blood rushing and energizing. i do not usually listen to rock music/ metal music but there’s something about poppy’s music that is so alluring and catchy, to the point i can’t peel my eyes away from it. the skillful and frenzied guitar riffs, liberating vocals chanting with rebellious energy, chaotic and twisted screams and the prominent distortion makes this a wild and electrifying package. i enjoy how poppy experiments with versatility on this album, how she stitches one genre together with the next, transitioning between moods almost instantaneously. it almost feels like she’s a robot malfunctioning and glitching, screaming at the top of her lungs and then singing the sweetest bedtime lullaby seconds later. these switch ups kept me on my toes, wondering what she would deliver next.

my only complaint is that the tracks “nothing i need” and “sick of the sun” requires a little bit more polishing. there isn’t many distinctive qualities of these two songs, and they sound like they could be easily placed on her previous pop album.
the structure and flow of the closing tack could also be formatted better imo.
other than that, this is a really great album!

Her best work to date. I've been a fan of her for a long time but none of her previous albums have caught me the way this one did. All the tracks mesh together in a perfect way and even if you don't like heavy music you will find a song you'll like for sure. Definitely worth your time

Escuchar este álbum es toda una experiencia porque no sabes que sonidos te puedes encontrar.
Desde una balada, una canción con sonidos electrónicos y heavy metal.

As a metal fan, but not a purist, Poppy's move into heavier music caught my attention in a big way. Every song feels distinct and the blending of genres within individual songs is very refreshing. There are a few sounds here and there I don't really get, but that's what happens when you try to be more experimental. I listened to this album on repeat all day.

What can I say? Some of Poppy's pop music was a guilty pleasure for me a few years ago but I wasn't the biggest fan but the end of her album Am I A Girl? Over the course of 2019, we got to here rock versions of classic pop tracks at her live shows, a new EP and 4 of the 10 tracks from I Disagree released as singles. The heavy metal that is on I Disagree is punchy, varied and unique compared to her pop songs. The album very much reminds me of last years Metal Galaxy by BABYMETAL, it is experimental and that really pays off. You have some lighter more pop songs and some very heavy metal and the variety presented means the album doesn't get stale when your listening through. My personal favourites are BLOODMONEY and Anything Like Me as the guitar work and vocals are impeccable. This record feels like a breath of fresh air for herself and her fanbase, she had a lot more creative freedom for this album. I would say out of her 3 albums. I Disagree is the one I will be coming back to over and over, and it has already made its way into my 2020 playlist. Expand

Unique, iconic and Lynchian, this one. It is probably the kind of album you need to "get" to enjoy, and you may not get it first time, so it may be a slow burner. It obviously went over the heads of many of the professional reviewers. However, if you do get it, your open mind will be rewarded, and you are likely to be left grinning from ear to ear frequently (and repeatedly askingUnique, iconic and Lynchian, this one. However, if you do get it, your open mind will be rewarded, and you are likely to be left grinning from ear to ear frequently (and repeatedly asking yourself under your breath "what just happened"?). There are also a couple of emotional sucker punches, and all sorts of unusual matters come under scrutiny in the songs. For me, I came to the music through one or two songs, then gradually found the others. Each song I heard was more impressive. It is pretty much an album of best songs, which is quite an achievement. The songs are all richly referential, using genre bending for observational, sarcastic, satirical and dramatic purposes. Some of the biggest emotional punches come from the rapid stylistic changes. Some people think that these are a weak point, but when you get to know the music, they are coolly calculated and effortlessly executed. The music videos are also rich with imagery and references for you to enjoy. Finally, music nerds will enjoy some awesomely complex rhythms in a couple of the tracks- everyone is going to need to learn to bop in 7/4 and sing tunes that feature augmentation and diminution of rhythms. It definitely blew the January blues away, and I hope it will be recognised in the long term for the dizzying achievement it is. Expand

This album feels like a breath of fresh air, yet absolutely poppy. The mix of genres that goes from metal to synth pop feels like the most chaotic milkshake you could drink, but you can't resist tasting it, and it tastes amazing

Not gonna lie, my expectations were high, and did it hit them? Well, no...

They surpassed them by miles and easily became my favorite of Poppy’s discography! The only way I can describe it is if Billie Eilish was metal, which I’ll have you know is an awesome idea that worked wonders for her. Within a day this album has become kinda iconic. It’s fantastic if you haven’t already, check it

The way this album seamlessly is able to blend pop and metal is unparalleled in the music industry. Nobody is doing it like Poppy right now. Bite Your Teeth is a spectacular example of what she can really do with metal. I Disagree is so much more polished and cohesive than Am I A Girl?, and better than her last to albums in every way. Poppy is paving the way for the "post-genre."

While Poppy going metal can come off as a gimmicky marketing ploy, and it is to some extent, "I Disagree" is a pleasant meld of different styles that comes together better than previously expected. When approached with an open-mind, this record has something to offer for fans of metal (specifically deathcore) , pop, industrial and electronic music.

For every comparison you can make of individual moments, there is little here that you can honestly say you’ve heard before, and little that can be judged on traditional terms. But that’s what makes her such a fascinating force.
