I Loved You At Your Darkest is another strong addition to Behemoth’s remarkable run, which has now lasted more than a quarter century. It reveals some welcome growth within a subgenre of heavy music that has often been resistant to evolution.

A well-earned victory lap for a band that pulled itself back from the brink of oblivion to sound stronger than ever. A source of pure joy, indeed.

I Loved You At Your Darkest offers conclusive proof that their Satanic majesty remains intact, even as they embark on their most ambitious artistic expression to date. [6 Oct 2018, p.53]

While there seems to be a macabre sense of humour at work in the decision to start the album with a children’s choir. Otherwise, this is trademark, huge, at times semi-operatic, industrially heavy black metal.

I Loved You At Your Darkest dips in and out of musical splendour, changing course and reference, and while not necessarily black metal in a full labeling sense, nor rock-heavy alone, it’s a rather accessible hybrid.

They mix a palette of distinctive darkness, creating a work of remarkable richness and thematic consistency. While there are still full-throttle assaults that recall the face-chewing passages of The Apostacy (‘Angelvus XIII’ packs particular bite), vast swathes of the album exude a more sinister magnificence.

In ILYAYD Nergal and his snack companions let us enter even more into their esoteric world. Probably this is their poppiest record ever done, and will also have a nice success. The album is powerful, dark and full of mind blowing sounds. There are no fillers, every song is a guilty pleasure and there is no reason to skip one! The bass of Orion seems come out from hell, Nergal with the guitar does the **** what he wants and the drums of Inferno are canons of the American Civil War. Behemoth confirm themselves as one of the top bands in the world! ILYAYD is also a huge candidate for the album of the year Expand

Only cover art'sI never though that the diabolic could has beauty, until listening to Behemoth. Beauty combined with competence. Doubt it? Only cover art's fancy is attractive enough to make you want to listen to this. Listening I Loved You at Your Darkest, you can't find the most original of the heavy bands, some of their vast influences as Mercyful Fate can be percieved itselfs easily by most attentive listeners, but the way that band mix these elements has a magical that seduces as almost none of extreme music can do. Beyond this, you are listening a lot of heavy riffs and melodious harmonies/solo guitars, an intoxicant bass' groove and vast library of blasting beats, jazz and hardcore influences from drums, everything tecnically flawless. The band's aesthetics, as musically as lyrically as visually, are notably carefully. A breath of relief for heavy music Expand

It felt it quite generic. No surprises although the sound is still solid. There's no progress or growth in my opinion.
