Sep 26, 2023Despite the cockiness of its title, his songs remain pleasingly mellow and eclectic, working through a range of styles (highlife, dancehall, Afro-Cuban) and delivering memorable hooks and melodies with the confidence of his status.
-
Aug 25, 2023Overall, ‘I Told Them’ is not only more memorable and focused than its expansive predecessor, but it’s his strongest album yet.
-
Aug 25, 2023Its production hones Burna Boy’s sprawling influences into music that feels punchy, inimitable and impressively streamlined.
-
Aug 25, 2023This confident and assured album surely ranks among his best.
-
Aug 30, 2023Burna Boy has more than established himself; I Told Them is an adventurous promise that he won’t become complacent.
-
Aug 25, 2023The songs on I Told Them… are sharply written but at times also tender, balancing seriousness with moments of levity. .... The album would have gone off without a hitch if Burna hadn’t decided to close it out by taking a shot at the people in his home country. On “Thank You,” an admittedly club-ready Afro-pop number, he accuses his fellow Nigerians of being ungrateful for what he’s done for the country’s image.
-
Aug 25, 2023Warmth rises consistently from I Told Them, with its easygoing mix of Afro pop, rap and R&B. You inhale it – soft, nourishing and moreish as if it’s steaming off freshly baked bread. There are moments of nutty chewiness, but mostly it’s stretches of pleasant, if airily bland, doughiness.
