Is 4 Lovers one of Death from Above 1979's most balanced and stylistically engaging albums.

Is 4 Lovers has plenty of style and substance. Though the album goes in some new directions, the formula of previous Death from Above 1979 releases is still there and it still works. Is 4 Lovers is heavy and unpolished but full of charm and memorable hooks to go with the rumbling bass and bruising rhythms.

On Is 4 Lovers, the pair have settled in and settled down, both in their lives and to their own sound.

Death From Above still pack a punch, but the bruise is a lot more colourful this time. ‘Is 4 Lovers’ is surely the band’s best work since their debut. And while they may never feel that vital again, they make right now feel like one helluva rush.

Is 4 Lovers is the band’s most playful album to date too, oscillating between The Beatles, Lenny Kravitz, Big Black, early (aka: good) Muse and The Rapture.

4 lovers of gloriously degraded punk pop. [May 2021, p.88]

‘Is 4 Lovers’ is both a worthy addition to the collection and a reminder of what the band has gained over the years since they were just two kids from Toronto blowing everyone’s minds by not hiring a guitarist.

With Is 4 Lovers, they not only prove that they can stretch without compromising, but also that intimacy and discovery can still be rockin’ AF.

It’s ok. There are only a few good tracks on this one, and I’m kinda disappointed.

The style is there, yet you can hear new directions and a little bit of experimentation. There are some tone changes as well, especially in the latter songs. Overall, this album therefore feels more complex than the last two. The success of You're A Woman, I'm A Machine was not replicated, but i feel like the fans can truly appreciate this album for its blend of novelty and tradition. Full Review »
