For sure, dollops of Franz, Blur and Supergrass have been whisked into this epileptic mix of guttural, quick-witted punk-pop but Little Death is no pre-packaged ready-bake; it’s an improvised, home-cooked palate-whetter, coated in rhythm and sprinkled with bite.
-
Little Death is indie for the fanzine generation, 12 blazing little fires of warmth that'll connect stylishly with the masses too.
-
Perfect pop without the pretence, basically.
-
Producer Gareth Parton (the Go! Team, Foals) wisely handles Little Death with a light touch, engineering some fantastic vocal interplay (like less dramaturgical versions of the Futureheads), and otherwise leaving things the hell alone.
-
It's almost impossible to pick favorites off an album that doesn't have a weak track.
-
Q MagazineTellingly, there isn't a weak song here, just 13 slices of original Pirate material. [Mar 2008, p.108]
-
Little Death may well resemble stolen kisses behind the bike shed rather than an evening of prolonged love making with the object of your desire, but that is still preferable to a night in with just a box of Kleenex for company.
-
MojoAs a snapshot of Friday night through Monday morning in 36 minutes flat, this is a joy. [Mar 2008, p.106]
-
There is imagination to spare here, as well as the occasional winning lyric ("Get out of bed, it's the wrong one", fruitily sung as a three-part harmony) and tunes that get under your skin after one listen.
-
UncutPete & The Pirates have a handful of great pop songs to balance out the weight of their obvious influences. [Mar 2008, p.97]
