With true, human conflict between happiness and sadness on full display, Man Alive! is unequivocally King Krule’s, or better yet, Archy Marshall’s most sobering work yet.
A something-for-everyone record that doesn't sacrifice any of its alternative, underground edge in the process is something that very few artists of Marshall's mould could pull off. And yet, on Man Alive!, a record that gets better with each passing listen, he has been able to quite comfortable achieve this.
Holding to Marshall’s wavelength requires a little more investment than the dingy music asks for, but that’s not to say his shadowland of the heart lacks nuance.
Marshall's lyricism remains beautifully inscrutable and passionate in equal measure. His go-to metaphors of sinking, floating, and dreaming are dispersed throughout tales of failed romance and urban malaise. After the album's first stretch of immediate standalone tracks, Man Alive! settles into a cinematic groove where the song arrangements are as nebulous as the lyrics and Marshall's toasty cigarette-burn vocals.
Marshall remains an unequivocally talented, trailblazing artist but this album’s bagginess and unremitting gloom mean it often struggles to hold the attention and unfortunately lacks much discernible appeal at all.

The first half of the album is almost flawless, but tracks like Underclass and Please Complete Thee drag the latter half down. The highlights are numerous, but to name a few I would mention Cellular, Perfecto Miserable and Slinky, while Alone, Omen 3 might just be Marshall’s greatest song yet.…Expand

The depressive energy, the heavy reflection, and the hypnotic observation are some of the temptations that are well appreciated in "Man Alive!". Produced by Archy Marshall and Dill Harris, this Slow-Rock is distinguished by its appeal to the Lo-Fi side of Punk decorated with a lot of Aesthetics that simply give a lot of Jazz-Punk flavor to all of this jumble of guitars, voices, and compositions. A very well made project that the lovers of the young VHS wave and the Gothic Hip-Hop like Skaters and young Dealers will thank. Outside of that, any person that travels a lot in the suburbs in public transport will find a great morphine of emotions in this album. "Man Alive!" is the placebo that many of us needs for the normalized pain.…Expand

It takes a few listens to really get to the core of how this album operates. It takes what made The OOZ so great and really sharpens it out. Also the most hopeful Krule album yet as it ends with one of Archy's most disarming performances. It's not a return to the sharp songwriting found on the highs of 6 Feet Beneath the Moon, but rather it trudges through The OOZ's rough aesthetic to reveal a more rewarding long game,
