A quietly seductive album that's atmospheric, sometimes melancholic, but often beautiful.

Though this record's pace does not change much during its 43 minutes of playtime, each track is a slow-burning confession from Summers and Weikel's subconscious, a genuine feat that has taken them 16 years to convey.

Because so many of the songs are nearly indistinguishable, listeners are likely to either embrace Negotiations as a unit or to dismiss it outright. If listeners resist the urge to listen sporadically on their iPods (and I highly recommend that they do), there's much to be celebrated.

A welcomed, warm and quality return for Helio Sequence, Negotiations yet again unveils the superlative sonic possibilities of these talented gents and how their creativity perfectly complements each other.

Negotiations' 11 tracks ebb and flow in similar ways to one another, but upon close inspection, the deft placement of nearly hidden sonic details is what makes the album so interesting, and breathes life into the band's already enjoyable soul-searching pop.

Summers and Weikel work incredibly well together on Negotiations. Summers' haunting voice and shimmering guitars roll and intertwine with Weikel's drum and synth work effortlessly. It's an album that may take an extended listen, but once you key in, you won't shake it off.

You'll find something to latch onto in every song, but you won't always walk away from Negotiations with its choruses in your head; it's a more consistent record than its predecessor, but more orderly, too, and the highs just aren't quite as high.

Negotiations develops spaciously, expanding with every song until it becomes enveloping.

there's an overwhelming sense of intimacy hanging over the album's 43 minutes, thanks to lyrics heavy on introspection and a sound served well by a new studio packed with vintage and analog gear.

There's a conflicting sense of progression with Negotiations.

As a whole Negotiations does little to distinguish the individual songs from the album's greater artistic statement.

Like a tightrope walker toeing a slack line, the Helio Sequence enters and exits this fifth full-length at its highest points... In between, Negotiations breaks down. [No.91, p.55]

Too much of the material is lightweight, ultimately making this an exercised in what might have been. [Oct 2012, p.101]
