NFR is easily Lana's best album. Constantly, the main criticism of Lana is her lack of sonically diverse music; this record takes that criticism and shuts it out. Lyrically, this album compiles serious topics with some funny sly remarks, enhancing the experience of listening to this album. Musically, the instrumentation is fantastic. The avoidance of using computers to make the instruments isn't something found often anymore, but it feels more ethereal and authentic. The first 5 tracks are the clear highlights, but that's not to say that the rest of the record isn't also great. It is, just not as great which is why this album is a 9, and not a 10. I think this album deserves its high critical appraise, and I can't wait to see Lana beat this album eventually! Expand

Lana del Rey is a chameleon. Every single one of her records experience a stylistic shift, however subtle. The radio pop of "Born to Die" which captured an audience with the 60's grace of "Video games " or the dark eclectic mastery of atmosphere on the haunting "Ultraviolence ". Every single one of her records experience a stylistic shift, however subtle. The radio pop of "Born to Die" which captured an audience with the 60's grace of "Video games " or the dark eclectic mastery of atmosphere on the haunting "Ultraviolence ". This skill had it's foundations on the trip hop production she often favoured and with the release of "Lust for Life" it seemed her creativity was wanning. Songs felt hollow and the record felt undercooked. Gone was the previous elegance of "honeymoon" and in it's place was a collection of outtakes passed off as a finished album.

My expectations were hampered until it happened. The 9min lush "Venice beach " dropped will little fan fare and gargantuan talent. It was a comfortable reinvention that should've been expected but was even better for it. Perfectly written in with the prose of a great novelist she delivered a love song for the times . I knew that whatever was to come would be a continuation of her three album streak, quite possibly topping it. And as "Marina Apartment Complex " followed i knew that she had captured the right muse for this one. The perfectly titled NFR felt like entering a gallery filled with an esteemed artists best work. She gives herself space to flex her skill such as the beautiful social reflection on "the greatest" or "happiness is a butterfly " which feels reminiscent of "liability ". Not a second of this long record is wasted. The touches of 70's aestheticidm or the career higlight production from Jack Antanoff are a match made in heaven. It feels like a grand statement, a literary classic that becomes required reading. It's Lana at her least obscure . The absence of the features that clogged "Lust for life" gives way for experiments with cadence (bartender) and layering (Venice b*tch).

It's an astonishing record not out off place amongst classics such as Joni's Blue. A must hear for any music fan.

Since it came out, I’ve listened to many other artists and albums, and NFR! continues to stay my number one. This album is pure art; pure poetry. When I first listened to it shortly after it came out in August of 2019, I did not expect that I would listen to it on repeat for quite literally over a year and still think about it constantly when I became tired of it simply because of sublime overexposure. Every song in this album is so gorgeously crafted and truly Lana at her peak of storytelling and her voice. The opening line “Godd*mn man child, you f-ed me so good that I almost said ‘I love you’” will literally live in my memory forever. It’s iconic. This album is such a cohesive & melancholic, yet in spots, hopeful piece of work. My standout tracks are literally all of them. I am not joking. Not a single one is bad. If I had to choose I’d say “Mariners…” “Venice B*tch” “Cinnamon Girl” “California” “Happiness is a Butterfly” and “Hope is a dangerous thing…” are my favorites. I’m just so in love with the way Lana’s mind works and that we get to listen to her stunning poetry in the form of songs. The lyrics of these songs deeply affected me for months and months as I listened to this album, and still do to this day. They helped me feel like my emotions were valid and lines like “You took my sadness out of context/at the Mariners Apartment Complex” and “24/7 Sylvia Plath” truly resonated. This is one of those albums that you just know will go down in music history as one of the best albums ever. Even Elton John called the songs “timeless” so you know that means something. I don’t know if Lana will ever be able to surpass what she achieved with this album because it’s just THAT good. Couldn’t recommend an album more. Now go listen to it!! Expand

Expand

This album clearly is Del Rey's masterpiece. We can feel the maturation not only in the production but also the lyrics.

Norman **** Rockwell! is Lana Del Rey’s best studio album with absolutely no skips. This album is just so beautiful and Lana’s voice sounds very good on this. NFR! was 100% my favorite album of 2019.

Things inevitably drift, but beneath the surface in the best songs there is a toughness and a newfound resilience.

It's a remarkably sharp pop record that retains her fascination with pop-culture iconography and the rosey simplicity of a post-war America where classic rock and blue jeans ruled and takes them to much deeper places. ... Think of it as an hour-long car ride peeling down the highway with classic rock blaring out of the radio and no real destination in mind other than where your impulsive nature might take you.

A thematically rich record, heavy on mood and elegantly written in a way that positions Del Rey between Eve Babitz and Carole King. There are beguiling and evolving melodies underneath the spare piano and acoustic arrangements. [Nov 2019, p.24]
