This record is a far cry from a mocking treatise on performativity; it's strongly felt, unceasingly surprising and just a whole lot of fun.

Even with all the jazz, jams, and wonky improvisations, the nine tracks of musicians' music remain fun, unpretentious.

Performance doesn’t necessarily take White Denim in a drastically different direction, but it captures so many of the different sides of the band’s multi-faceted sound that it feels expansive and wholesome.

Their confidence is so clearly on show here, and despite two fresh members for the album they're already tight and unanimous of their vision: "to make interesting, up-tempo rock & roll."

Unlike some of their past work, Performance finds the band at its' most lean and focused. The album is a concise 33 minutes and it seems designed to be listened to while performing some task of one's own volition.

Eight albums in, and some of that edgy math-rock experimentalism has been lost, along with two original members of Leon Bridges’ band. But what they now lack in raw, ferocious edginess, they make up for glorious driving riff on Performance.

Performance is, thankfully, anachronistic to the point of absurdity--if you close your eyes anywhere in this record, you’ll be transported to somewhere deep in the '70s, where there are no genres because nobody really cares about that kind of nonsense.

A perfect late-summer soundtrack on a par with their 2009 masterpiece Fits. [Sep 2018, p.114]

Performance is expertly weighted between great hooks and loose, Southern-styled jams that dare you to shake a leg. [Sep 2018, p.39]

Performance is White Denim's most produced album, thickly textured with brass, keyboards and studio atmospheres. Play it loud, though, and you easily imagine the euphoria at the bar after every track. [Sep 2018, p.84]

By making complex sounds and riffs seem simple and natural, it evokes a "you got this" feeling within that reassures you everything's going to be alright.

For a four-piece rock band from Texas, they still remain pretty difficult to classify and almost impossible to ignore. Play loud and enjoy.

In all, Performance is an immensely controlled assortment of what White Denim does best--which might please some and (eventually) bore others.

Whether you end up jumping on board with Performance will depend on the extent of your own predilection for “real music” nostalgia, but those who do find themselves in the passenger seat are likely to have a pretty fun time.

Performance may be lacking in progress, but the effortlessness of their experiments is still very much present, and nine albums in, White Denim remain as playful as ever. Overall, longtime fans of the band are likely to be satisfied, if not dazzled, by their latest effort.

Befitting their Austin roots, this band is nothing if not eclectic. Fuzzed-out blues riffs and proggy synth textures, blended in an array of funky grooves and syncopated rhythms, evoke everything from T. Rex and the Steve Miller Band, to the Black Keys and even Subdivisions-era Rush. As It must be, in order to pull off such a feat so successfully, the musicianship here is first-rate.

This is one of those rarest of accomplishments, a record with more math-rock cred than you can tabulate on a graphing calculator, yet your girlfriend will still want to dance to it!
