With its slow-disco hi-hat and splashy snares, 'Ma bien aimée bye bye' sets a sedate groove that the rest of the album never quite picks up. There's no irresistible '80s soul-funk like 'Girlfriend', nor a sprightly dance-routine-friendly hit like 'Tilted'. Instead, the pace is usually and resolutely stately.

Though these are often beautiful and uneasy songs, too many of them feel rudderless.

There are glimmers of his facility for earworm melodies and nimble grooves, but they tend to be overwhelmed by an air of bombastic stridency.

Notably absent from Redcar les adorables étoiles is the sense of exquisite, crystalline vision present in Letissier’s prior work. Perhaps this lack is only a function of the production style, featuring reverb-soaked vocals, rambling melodies, and spacey synthesizers.

There’s no song as straightforwardly appealing as Girlfriend or Tilted. That said, there are moments when his innate songwriting ability is very much in evidence. ... But the album is peppered with tracks that feel formless and sketchy.

Even with the bright flickers of Kate Bush-like experimentation and excellent Depeche Mode disco, though, these songs tend to lack the high-definition of 2018's Chris, their earnestly fixed intensity never quite catching from pop smoulder to earth-scorching flame. [Dec 2022, p.84]

It brings its fair share of frustration, but Christine And The Queens’ third record is undoubtedly interesting, a lateral progression if ever there was one.

Letissier is a fascinating and riveting performer, but this passion project feels unfocused and undercooked. [Mar 2023, p.26]

Serving as the Prologue to an extended project, Redcar is our introduction to a new era of Christine and the Queens. Experimental yet polished, constrained yet boundless. The accompanying performance at The Royal Festival Hall really helped to illustrate Redcar's vision for this project and the fluidity of his work as both music and theatre. I think that Christine and the Queens is truly one of the most exciting and underrated artists of our time. Full Review »

In many ways it reminds me of some of my favourite Cocteau Twins moments. The production allowing the vocals to bleed into the music to create rich textures. There are still enough melodies and pop beats here to make this a pop record but it won't tire. Full Review »

Can reinventing and regenerating oneself start from the music of years past? surely third full-length release 'Redcar les adorables étoiles'Can reinventing and regenerating oneself start from the music of years past? surely third full-length release 'Redcar les adorables étoiles' becomes a complex web of sound, at times over-elaborated, so much so that they bump into each other too much. Lyrics with character and clear to read. Full Review »
