Ribbons feels almost like a homecoming. [Jul 2019, p.106]

It’s all so very lovely and natural.

There is a classicism to the songs that give Ribbons a mature, lived in feel but also dislocates it from any specific era, giving it a unique and distinctive feel.

Instead of distracting, Ribbons' tangents add to its masterful feel--at this point in Wilkinson's career, his music is so rich that he can bring any aspect of it to the fore in ways that feel equally natural and surprising.

A record that focuses on fleeting glimpses, on liminal evenings and burgeoning mornings, it’s imbued with sublime melodic flair and a lingering atmosphere that echoes after the final note has been plucked gracefully from Bibio’s well-served guitar.

With Ribbons, it is clear that Bibio is trying to take the best parts of his music over the years and bring them together into one concise, but eclectic, album, and on more than a few moments, he succeeds beautifully.

The back half of tracks plays out like a rehashing of the first half more than an expansion on them, and Ribbons suffers from it. ... Still, the inviting nature of this record is well worth the time.

The results are as reassuring as the memory of your favorite counselor picking up a weather-beaten acoustic guitar by the light of the campfire.

There’s few missteps--a middle section which ventures off discordantly into murkier electronica never quite seems to fit a listen-through. But Wilkinson has once again proved his complete mastery of bottling a certain tone to his music through the right craft of sounds. With Ribbons, he has bottled springtime.

The rural atmosphere, created by banjo, violin and Mellotron and summer seeds/ autumn leaves references and even some cow-mooing samples, is joined by more experimental sounds, which can easily fit into his last ambient album. And I really like how this effort doesn't seem to belong in any era sonically, and that's perhaps its distinctive virtue. Full Review »

Gives off a really chill vibe. It's nothing new for Bibio, but returning to these sounds reveal a new level of refinement to his craft. This guy's the godfather of that whole "24/7 lo-fi hip hop beats" wave that went on for a bit. Yet as vague and overcrowded that stream tends to get, Bibio stands idiosyncratically for his unwavering ambition in sound and occasionally outstanding songwriting. It's a little bloated at over 50 minutes, but it stays relatively consistent throughout (w/ some highlights as well). If you want something with a punch, I would look elsewhere. But if those two things didn't steer you away, give this thing a shot. Full Review »
