Jun 27, 2017Each track melds into its predecessor and its successor, creating a mesmeric experience that truly captivates the attention and inspires awe at the sheer musicality of Thurston Moore.
-
Apr 28, 2017By the time “Aphrodite” grinds to a close, his group slowing intuitively in lockstep while he unleashes lightning bursts of noise, Moore has made a convincing case that this marks a new beginning.
-
Apr 28, 2017While there will undoubtedly be some who bemoan the same failing within Rock n Roll Consciousness, there’s no way Thurston Moore is going to stop for anyone.
-
Apr 27, 2017His most concise, transportive record to date. The keys to Consciousness’ triumph: fewer songs, fewer vocals, way, way more gorgeous guitar work.
-
Apr 27, 2017Moore’s followers will glory in the winding passages of guitars scratched, spiked, stroked and droned, now with the added bonus of fuzzy solos from latest axe accomplice James Sedwards.
-
Apr 26, 2017Working with avant-rock guitarist James Sedwards, My Bloody Valentine bassist Debbie Googe and his old Sonic Youth colleague Steve Shelley, Thurston Moore has created one of the cornerstone works of his entire career with Rock N Roll Consciousness.

MojoApr 25, 2017The result is tender, powerful avant-rock to shake the walls. [Jun 2017, p.94]
-
Q MagazineApr 24, 2017The results are frequently riveting. ... A challenging listen, then, but that's its appeal. [Jun 2017, p.110]
-
UncutApr 24, 2017These five expansive tracks forgo punk rock sloganeering in favour of themes of mystery, sorcery and spiritual jubilation. [Jun 2017, p.34]
-
Apr 24, 2017This is the sound of a questing spirit pushing at the parameters of unlimited freedom, a hand reaching out to grasp infinity and not falling far short.
-
Apr 28, 2017Where The Best Day proffered a somewhat uneven mix of extended odysseys and rough-hewn sketches, Rock n Roll Consciousness is much more cohesive and smoothly sequenced.
-
May 17, 2017A lean 5 songs that complement each other over the course of a transcendent 40 minute journey. But he still works with a varying palette of moods, from expansive stoner rock (Exalted) to agitated post-punk (Cusp), all while retaining a sonic richness that feels more like an artfully conceived sonic installation than a traditional album.
-
Apr 28, 2017Another fine addition to his solo work, Rock N Roll Consciousness proves that Moore's search for enlightenment through noise remains vital.
-
Apr 28, 2017Ultimately, Rock n Roll Consciousness is a collection of songs that would sit as comfortably in and amongst Sonic Youth’s back catalogue as they do within Moore’s own solo work. And that's no bad thing at all.
-
Apr 26, 2017Moore, along with My Bloody Valentine’s Deb Goodge (bass) and guitarist James Sedwards (Chrome Hoof) and the aforementioned Shelley, is displaying a fine linear growth with Rock N Roll Consciousness.
-
Apr 24, 2017The esotericism of the disc works best as a vocal counterpart and keeping to the margins, helping all the pieces come together for work that draws on an avant past (if such a thing exists) while pushing its way into new territories.
-
The WireAug 8, 2017They make it sound easy, and there are moments where that ease works in their favour. “Exalted” has the same gliding grace as the best moments on Moore’s last album of songs, The Best Day; conversely the way Shelley and Googe bear down on “Aphrodite” is quite satisfying. Still, the record could have used a more contrarian filter. [Jun 2017, p.67]
-
Apr 25, 2017All told, Rock n Roll Consciousness feels deep and multilayered, the kind of record you want to spend some time with, a piece of art that will continue to change and shift as you engage with it.

Dec 30, 2017This is a really good SY'ish album and my favorite of Thurston's solo stuff. Try and get the Japanese Edition with 7 tracks though.
