In this case you get the sense that Kozelek wanted to share songs that get him through, in earnest. It also affords the opportunity to learn more about the origins of great songs that have found their way in to influence a talented singer/songwriter.

As relaxing as it is to hear Mark Kozelek sing favorites, the consistent pleasantries result in the album feeling minor and a little safe when compared to something like Benji. Sometimes, it takes a little ugliness and danger to elevate an album from good to great.

Mark Kozelek Sings Favorites comes off as if it was created to serve Kozelek more than to stimulate the listener, making the no-frills, stripped-down set easy to fall for to but tough to return to.

As might be expected, the favourites chosen by Mark Kozelek for his covers album are predominantly those reflecting cloudy, sometimes ambivalent emotional responses.

Fans of the ever-prolific artist might enjoy it simply because it is unmistakably a Mark Kozelek album, but his dry, straightforward readings won't do anything to convince listeners who don't share the same sentiments for these tunes.

At its best, the casual atmosphere makes for one of Kozelek’s loosest, lightest collections to date: something to throw on when you don’t have the emotional capacity for his more distinctive albums.
