Her debut record, SOUR, will be a contender for best pop album of the year. There are no filler tracks on SOUR. Each song represents a different side to Rodrigo’s artistry, embracing every influence that’s shaped her music, while still creating something fresh.

Nuanced and often exceptional debut album. ... Songwriting flourish is emblematic of what Rodrigo has learned from Taylor Swift on this album (which, in shorthand, is Swift’s debut refracted through “Red”): nailing the precise language for an imprecise, complex emotional situation; and working through private stories in public fashion.

A collection of polished, precociously accomplished pop that doubles as one of the most gratifyingly undignified breakup albums ever made.

When it works, it really works.

For the most part, Rodrigo has passed the bar she set on that single [‘drivers license’], sharing with us an almost-masterpiece that’s equal parts confident, cool and exhilaratingly real. This is no flash-in-the-pan artist, but one we’ll be living with for years to come.

Her combination of sweet melodies and bitter moods, her conversational flow, and her self-awareness are all skills many songwriters twice her age would love to call their own, and they make Sour a well-rounded emotional journey and strong debut album.

At times, it feels as though the polite, considered Rodrigo could push ideas, emotions and melodies a little further than she does. ... But this is an incredibly impressive debut from a singer who’s only just learning to stretch her wings.

Songs like deja vu or traitor are still on my mind. This album represents so well the heartbroken teenager spirit.

I truly, truly, truly love this album. I don’t think that any album is perfect but this one comes close. The only thing I would say is ifI truly, truly, truly love this album. I don’t think that any album is perfect but this one comes close. The only thing I would say is if you’re looking for a sonically cohesive album, maybe skip this one. In my opinion, this album is very all over the place, but in the best way. “Brutal, jealousy jealousy, and hope ur ok” describe teenage emotions in very great depth. It’s sad how every lyric of brutal relate to me a little too much. The rest of the album displays her range in vocals and genres, but they all share one thing in common. Teenage heartbreak. Olivia did not just say “he broke my heart I hate him” she truly described what he did, how she feels, what she wished was different, how she felt back then, and more. This album is just truly beautiful and I think that it displays how much she is not just a Disney kid! Expand

Strong vocals and great production and instrumentation though I find some of the distortion effects on the vocals a little harsh. My main issue is the theme. Every song is a sad love song. It gets a little boring by the time you get to the end of the album. With that said, I think this album is a solid start for a singer/songwriter who is right at the start of her career. She has plenty time to mature her songwriting themes and maybe her next album will be score an 8 or higher, Expand
