Tove Lo’s fourth album sees the star largely stick the formula that made her successful in the first place, but that’s no bad thing: it features some of her best work in years as she boldly embraces new sounds and unusual collaborators. Exhilarating and fearless, Tove Lo has ensured she’s stayed relevant with a bold, brash and at often quite brilliant record.

She's still in her element luxuriating in that crisis point where comfort is soured by paranoia. ... Relative stability suits her just fine. [Nov 2019, p.112]

ove Lo’s songwriting is unsubtle but not uncomplicated, and while her scenes are well-worn in pop music—bodies tangled in purple lights, morning sun stabbing at hangovers—her best tracks are both blunt and polished enough to sound original. At its worst, the album can slump into fizzy banalities.

As Lo puts her stamp on all of Sunshine Kitty's different sounds and emotions, there's a breeziness that hasn't been present in her music since Queen of the Clouds.

Although Sunshine Kitty could be shaved down a bit, this album feels like the first time Tove Lo is really situating herself on her own ground. It's sexy, raw, and honest — but above all, Sunshine Kitty is just really good dance music. Essentially, every song on this album would bring anyone to their feet.

Lo‘s 2014 song Habits popularised luxuriant pop nihilism, a sound that dominated the latter half of the decade and no longer sounds as fresh as it did. Ms. Lo is back with her catchy hooks, her raspy beautiful vocals, and her intimate (sometimes, R-rated) lyrics, but somehow, following the same formula is never boring with her. She always finds new ways to make it interesting, and relatable. She wears her heart on her sleeve on tracks like 'Sweettalk my Heart' and 'Mateo' which turns them into instant highlights. She turns it up and takes us to the club with tracks like 'Jacques' and 'Are u gonna tell her?'. She sings about a same-sex heartbreak ('Bad as the Boys'), but also won't stop comparing herself to a female counterpart stealing her man ('Really don't like you', 'Mistaken', the latter being easily the best song on this record). She empowers her bestfriend (and women in general) on 'Glad He's Gone', and expresses how much she's done giving to someone who won't reciprocate on 'Shifted'.

That's how diverse this record is. It's guaranteed that anything you're feeling will fall somewhere on the spectrum "Sunshine Kitty" delivers, which proves that Tove Lo's career is on a rollercoaster that only goes up.
