    Largely regressive, but somehow satisfying.

There is nothing special about this--dualities of form and content are as old as art itself.

The Jezabels are a talented collective, but I find their latest set half as compelling as it could have been. The Brink remains grounded when it should soar.

Although The Brink does sound more assured and accomplished than their debut, The Jezabels’ return poses a number of problems, the most central of which being that it is just far too pedestrian.

This is wishy-washy music for moody goth-lite teens. [Apr 2014, p.112]

More often, though, The Brink is slick yet uninvolving, its titles (Time to Dance, Look of Love) as prosaic as the contents therein.

It's difficult to know where to stand with The Brink. It's vanilla, it's milk in tea, it's lager, it's a morning bowel movement. It just is.

Their pop-rock posturing comes studded with lyrical yearning but lacks real emotional weight. [Mar 2014, p.96]

Great bands are not followers and while I'm not sure if I would consider them great at this time, they are progressing to that point. They are extremely impressive live and it's always a pleasure to see them.
