Where the Postelles excel over Hammond's band is in how sublimely relaxed they sound.

The Postelles is remarkably polished and consistent for a debut. If you're looking for something fresh, you'd do well to look elsewhere.

Their debut--co-produced by the Strokes' Albert Hammond Jr., who leaves his fingerprints all over the band's chiming guitars--swaggers with tales of lost love set to memorable melodies.

More stompers like "White Night" and "123 Stop," bubblegum throwbacks with a Wilson Pickett kick, would be welcome.

The Postelles (who produced the remaining tracks themselves) spend most of their time re-creating Is This It? with scrubbed-up, squeaky-clean results. Ultimately, that's where the album fails.

At their best, the Postelles sound recalls Elvis Costello, only poppier and sans drollness; at its worst, it's grown-up pop-punk with a weak handle on irony.
