Odd that "Beautiful Now" goes from horny ("I see what you're wearing/There's nothing beneath it") to Maroon 5-esque (the cloying "ba, ba, ba-ba, bah!" chorus), but otherwise the slick and skillful True Colors is built for fans of Zedd's music rather than his social media followers.

Ultimately, Zedd’s True Colors shows the guy is brilliant at what he does, and for those who want to get all in their feelings on the way to a festival or to soundtrack a beach date with bae (or a group of friends), this will be the disc to keep on repeat.

On True Colors, each track tries to be a separate statement as Zedd tries to crash through his own, pre-existing glass ceiling--but the whole falls short of the sum of its parts.

Though he cycles through a major-label budget's worth of sounds and vocalists (including Selena Gomez and earnest rapper Logic), Zedd's colors are often hard to tell apart.

True Colors does traverse familiar, populous formats that may be difficult to innovate on top of, but other posi-tinted, mass audience-focused projects have found success by mixing their own cocktails of EDM, soul, and of-the-minute rap production. Zedd’s True Colors, though, feels underformed and unoriginal.

I know he wanted to put emotion and EDM in the same songs, but when you listen to them, It sounds clearly forced, and the only track with an obvious sound was obviously chosen as the opening single. Anyway there are some moments in the album which make it really worthy and, overall, "True Colors" is a catchier, slightly better album than "Clarity". Nevertheless, he's got the same problem of her friend Lady Gaga: YOU CAN'T MAKE EDM TEARJERKER (unless you are Nervo). Full Review »

Coming in at just about 50 minutes, the album never feels overlong, and comes across as a collection of future hit singles, each more dynamic and subversive than the last. Full Review »
