This isn't a collection of overlooked compositions, it's a bit of pop archeology, excavating records that feel right. Every one of these 19 cuts certainly does feel right, sounding sun-burned and blissed-out, embodying the hangover of the hippie dream.

Without hearing the rest of the albums these songs came from, there’s no way of knowing if we’re dealing with the work of lost greats, or just artists who had one fleeting moment of inspiration, three minutes of great music and nothing more. As it stands, Cosmic American Music is a fine bit of musical archaeology.

As seemingly odd and specialized as this collection’s focus is, it should nonetheless find a wide and appreciative audience among fans of country rock, Americana, alt-country, etc. No one is going to fall in love with every track here, but everyone s guaranteed to find a few that will become personal favorites.

The charm of these tracks, though, is in their now-less-common unselfconsciousness (with its close kin, indulgence, lurking nearby) and the largely likable blemishes reminding us that music, above all, should sound human. For better and occasionally worse, this music unquestionably does.

For the most part, the songs on Cosmic American Music slip into the ether without much to keep them earthbound.
