Sometimes he might repeat tricks, but his is a freedom few will ever know. [Feb 2016, p.60]

This set is intriguing, though recent Fall is easiest to take in small doses.

Add remixes and instrumentals and this short set gets knocked down a peg, but it's a classic EP in its own way, jumbling brilliance with clearing-house stuff, and ending up a desirable package, instrumental and all.

Wise Ol' Man is about 70 percent filler, with two new songs, three remixes and alternative takes from the last album, and the two new songs done again as mostly instrumental versions, But the new songs are great, especially the title track. [No. 128, p.55]

It would be wrong to compare this with something like the ineffable Slates, given the group’s perennially shifting trajectory, but that EP has an enduring, remarkable consistency that’s all-too-often missed.

Wise Ol’ Man won’t go down as one of the essential puzzle pieces to the story of the Fall, but it at least boasts a killer title cut.
