Devotchka has harnessed a spectrum of emotions and attitudes in each of its albums, from nostalgia and longing to mischief. This has never been more true than with 100 Lovers, the indie-gypsy-mariachi-fusion quartet's sixth full-length.

DeVotchKa creates music that explodes with the desperate passion of someone standing at the end of a pier, or lost in the middle of a desert.

A joyfully inspired album from a band who give pomp a good name. [Apr 2011, p.78]

The music is second to none on this album, truly, and is only made more potent with wildly imaginative lyricism.

Both aspects of the album exemplify great music played by great musicians and should be anything but a disappointment.
  6. It's still a cut above most epic global-influenced rock.

In what very well could be a transitional album for an evolving band, Urata's achingly expressive voice is the unbreakable thread keeping these two somewhat disparate mini albums safely tethered.

Regularly swelling with gorgeous string arrangements and Urata's slurring, operatic bellows, 100 Lovers feels like a reverse-engineered soundtrack to a beautiful foreign film in dire need of epic landscapes and intimate moments of romance.

Although DeVotchKa's fifth album finds the group less interested in wildly crossing borders, it's still the sound of a seasoned traveler-just one who's finally found a comfortable resting place.

Some of the album's instrumental tracks nod to the likelihood that Hollywood will come calling again soon, but 100 Lovers makes a case for DevotchKa's place being stage front rather than behind the curtain. [Feb 2011, p. 63]

It's a melting pot to be sure, and the band has a tendency to go heavy on the atmosphere and light on the hooks, but there's never any doubt that it's a brew tended over by some awfully talented cooks.

The band crafts their songs (and albums) carefully, with almost narrative arcs and strong emotional pulls.

100 Lovers has a fair few highlights, but as a whole it's merely another example of Devotchka still not managing to successfully capture the exuberance of their live show on record.

Gradually, he surfaces along with the band's worldly identity, but the sentiments behind the histrionic symphonics often remain obscured, and the band's desperation lacks focus.

DeVotchKa cycle through and marry varying strains of world music with great aplomb. It's very rare that you'll find a seam.

Devotchka has at least found a way to continue making tuneful, relatively entertaining music, as their contemporaries either verge on self-parody or have given up altogether. But nothing about 100 Lovers suggests anything more than another attempt to break even.

US gypsy folkies ramble aroudn the musical map. [Apr. 2011, p. 94]

100 Lovers baffles with the breadth of its misfires; from sequencing to packaging design to instrumentation, this is a band taking bold steps in the wrong direction.

This site attracts some hugely opinionated musical 'critics' who obviously have egos that far out-strip their banal and shallow musical tastes. If the cap fits wear it ( Mojo et al). In my opinion, which is as weighty in this environment as any pretentious 'critic', is a piece of music beauty which will outlast the callow critiques of pretentious small fry like 'Really small tapes' Full Review »

It'sI really like gypsy-fusion bands but Devotchka was always that sort of group I didn't get much. This album made me change my mind. It's consistent. It starts at one point and keeps on building taking you through the journey and the concept conceived by the band. It's experimental, without sacrificing the integrity or essence of the group. In a time when instant gratification dominates the music scene, this is a characteristic much appreciated. Loved it. Full Review »

Though their previous album possessed some of their most outstanding tracks, half the album I still find myself skipping over. I don't think there is anything as incredible as "How It Ends" or "The Clockwise Witness", this new album is good Devotchka throughout, particularly tracks 2,4,7,9, and 11. Full Review »
