100 Lovers has a fair few highlights, but as a whole it's merely another example of Devotchka still not managing to successfully capture the exuberance of their live show on record.

Gradually, he surfaces along with the band's worldly identity, but the sentiments behind the histrionic symphonics often remain obscured, and the band's desperation lacks focus.

DeVotchKa cycle through and marry varying strains of world music with great aplomb. It's very rare that you'll find a seam.

Devotchka has at least found a way to continue making tuneful, relatively entertaining music, as their contemporaries either verge on self-parody or have given up altogether. But nothing about 100 Lovers suggests anything more than another attempt to break even.

100 Lovers baffles with the breadth of its misfires; from sequencing to packaging design to instrumentation, this is a band taking bold steps in the wrong direction.

This site attracts some hugely opinionated musical 'critics' who obviously have egos that far out-strip their banal and shallow musical tastes. If the cap fits wear it ( Mojo et al). In my opinion, which is as weighty in this environment as any pretentious 'critic', is a piece of music beauty which will outlast the callow critiques of pretentious small fry like 'Really small tapes' Full Review »

It'sI really like gypsy-fusion bands but Devotchka was always that sort of group I didn't get much. This album made me change my mind. It's consistent. It starts at one point and keeps on building taking you through the journey and the concept conceived by the band. It's experimental, without sacrificing the integrity or essence of the group. In a time when instant gratification dominates the music scene, this is a characteristic much appreciated. Loved it. Full Review »

Though their previous album possessed some of their most outstanding tracks, half the album I still find myself skipping over. I don't think there is anything as incredible as "How It Ends" or "The Clockwise Witness", this new album is good Devotchka throughout, particularly tracks 2,4,7,9, and 11. Full Review »
