Amid the brightness and snark of another consistently entertaining Fujiya & Miyagi record, it’s a reminder that even our modern Lucifers have many dimensions to them.

With their fifth album, Artificial Sweeteners, Fujiya & Miyagi once again mine opposite ends of the lyrical spectrum whilst delivering their most musically satisfying collection to date.

There's a renewed vigour to its frugging mix of vintage synths, barking-dog bass stabs and jagged electric guitars. [Jun 2014, p.94]

There’s little else to nitpick about this latest collection; just like artificial sweeteners, it’s a simple but dangerous addiction.

Artificial Sweeteners may not be their most instantly impressive album, 2008's Lightbulbs still has that honor, but it does sound great on first listen and continues to sink in deeper with each subsequent spin.

They still sound a little too arch and buttoned-up to make a convincing transition from lab to club. [Jun 2014, p.111]

"If in doubt, smile and dance" is the agenda.

We’re submitting this one for further clinical studies.

Being F&M, they can’t help adding funky, syncopated twitches to break up the four-square march occasionally.

Disappointingly, F&M's fifth album reinforces the trio's constant strength and weaknesses. [Jun 2014, p.78]

All in all it’s a competently executed album that keeps your feet tapping and head nodding for as long as it lasts, but one that takes too few risks and bares too little soul to linger in the listener’s thoughts and emotions once it’s over.

Artificial Sweeteners certainly isn't a terrible album, and it does the trick if you're just looking for a quick pick-me-up, but it leaves a bland aftertaste.
  13. Their attempts to assimilate their record collections often fall between two stools--unlikely to do the business on a dancefloor or spirit you away at home through the power of its sequencing.

Artificial Sweeteners doesn’t have a great deal of low-end to it, and struggles for genuine groove as a result.

Fujiya & Miyagi can rock! In fact, they can punk rock. David Best is a guitar god in an electronica band. The album does not, unfortunately,Fujiya & Miyagi can rock! In fact, they can punk rock. David Best is a guitar god in an electronica band. The album does not, unfortunately, rock as hard as their live shows, but I hear the influences of Gang of Four and Sonic Youth in addition to the more expected influences of Depeche Mode and Kraftwerk. If you get the chance to see them live, do not pass it up. Full Review »
