The fact is, on Black Laden Crown, Danzig seems to have reached the conceptual and sonic epiphany he’s been searching for since the end of Danzig 4. The production issues may dampen this epiphany to a degree, but a production problem in of itself is not enough to buckle the dark message behind the computerized choices.

There needs to be a balance of reflection, inspiration and originality or things will come off stale and forced. Try as Danzig might, he never does find that equilibrium.

His vocals are becoming more textural and less the main focus. That actually works, as Crown has his smartest writing in years, keeping his youthful demons alive, if not running amok. He may have matured, but we don’t want to him to grow up.

Black Laden Crown is at its best when the band keeps it slow and low, as they do with great success on workmanlike candelabra-burners like "Last Ride," "Skulls & Daisies," and "Pull the Sun" and it's in those solemn moments of churning, Jim Morrison-esque torment and woe that Glenn Danzig sounds the most sinister and at ease.

Ponderous musicality can be both mesmerizing and boring, and Black Laden Crown touches on both extremes.

There’s not even anything very embarrassing about Black Laden Crown, the first Danzig album since 2010’s Deth Red Sabaoth--it’s just plain old boring.

The songwriting is certainly not poor and Glenn’s voice is far from shot, but what makes this album so average is the combination of the lazy arrangements and the poor production which makes the album sound as if the veteran vocalist is singing over a backing CD.

He's such an underrated guitarist, his early work with Prong is superb.
There's a couple of fillers ,but on the whole a great album.

It's solid from start to finish and it's easily his best album in many years. The mixing is the true killer though. It's god awful and it kind of ruins the album just like it ruined Skeletons. I'd love to see both those albums remixed to prove just how good they could be. Expand
