His gentle pleadings and luring lines evoke lightheadedness, and at times lack enunciation, like he was just wheeled out of oral surgery and had his water laced with an aphrodisiac.

Though Milosh remains focused on exploring the full range of his vocal instrument, he infuses the album’s 11 tracks with a sultry, often carnal warmth and raw energy that Rhye’s debut eschewed in favor of hushed, slickly produced ambience.

Blood, like ‘Woman’, is honest. It’s an endearing expression of sexuality.

A near-perfect record. ... Blood flows with humanity, an exploration of diverse cultures, sounds and sensibilities. Rhye reveals that it is in tune with itself and inhabits a world that feels distant and inclusive at once.

The best moments come when the duo break out of their languid comfort zone, as on the breezy Feel Your Weight and dynamic Phoenix. [Mar 2018, p.90]

By recording the album with his live band, he frames his unmistakably husky countertenor with a set of warm, natural sounds that form a bedrock for the raw emotions on Blood rather than distracting from them.

It also formalizes some of the sensual spontaneity of Woman, as he puts forth a lavish, spotless output that also suffers from some seriously tasteless lyrical choices. On Blood, Rhye's fixation with style does get the best of him.

This album often sounds like a studio-crafted simulacrum of a full-band performance, every element a bit too polished.

In the end, Blood is equal parts impressive and frustrating. In many ways, Milosh recreates the triumphs of his previous work with a new recording process and a new set of characters, but his lyrical shortcomings and push to maintain a consistent mood above all else hold him back somewhat.

So what has five years changed? Not much, in the best possible way. More smooth soul commentaries on sensuality and longing, more time shaped melodies and movements. The differences between their Woman and Blood are the subtle groove changes.

[An] equally seductive follow-up [to 2013's Woman] with a musical collective shaped from his touring band. [Mar 2018, p.113]

The first half engages with songs like "Count to Five" and its strutting tone that hearkens to turn-of-the-Eighties boogie-style jazz-funk. But [Blood's] second half doesn't falter as much as it fades. Tracks like "Blood Knows" and "Stay Safe" sound baroque and formless despite the band's gentle yet swinging touches.

Maintaining Rhye’s style while enlivening it with non-synthesized instruments is the only real statement the album chooses to deliver--Blood is too gentle to telegraph much of anything concrete. Milosh’s lyrics are vague mattresses of assonance on which he lays down impressions of emotion.

Some bands are lucky and talented enough to find a format that works and just make hay with it. Rhye are plainly in love with their formula on Blood. The result is a finely balanced gem.

It’s more minimal than The xx, more romantic than the most heartsick R&B, with drums pulled straight from ’70s studio sessions. In other words, it’s a lot of things, while still sounding like nothing else out there.

The detailing throughout is fabulous: the way Phoenix builds almost imperceptibly, introducing the slightest of funk guitar, then sotto stabs of horns; the way Feel Your Weight keeps shifting and building without ever losing direction.

The themes tackled on BLOOD have been tackled a million times, so the album is much more reliant on how it tells the story than what the story is. Luckily, how it tells the story more than makes up for the story itself. Milosh’s vocals are as beautiful as ever, and the lush tones that paint the album wash over you like a silk bedsheet.

Working with a number of producers, he's created another collection of songs that speak directly to an intense and emotional connection with someone, and all the good, bad and sexy that come along with that.

It is very easy to allow this album to fade into the background, there's nothing that's really exciting about it. While the singing and the songwriting might be there, the record lacks any real passion or structure to it. This is not the album you want to get down and dirty with instead it is the kind of thing that you fall asleep to. This album hits a lot. Unfortunately it misses far too often. Full Review »
