Their new album Bunny marks a clear step forward in production value and tightened songcraft.

Bunny's performances are pristine: the record navigates its hooks, sonic sways and immaculate v..v..vibes with palpable ease.

Though there’s nothing here that’s particularly original or knock-you-flat outstanding, it’s all handled impeccably, recorded vividly, and sequenced smartly to make the album’s 38 minutes fly by.

‘Bunny’ is an album that rewards listening with a sense of naivety. Basking in its summery sheen is more than enough to draw pleasure from. But if you allow yourself the time to uncover all of its layers of depth, that glow only becomes brighter.

Every moment shimmers with atmosphere, as the rippling melodies and contoured choruses enclose Payseur's knotty ruminations in sun-dappled serenity. [Jul 2023, p.23]

The moderate pacing and more personally derived songwriting make the album one that demands closer attention to fully understand and enjoy, but it rewards that attention with some of the band's most nuanced and subtly detailed pop constructions to date, ultimately revealing new depths both musical and emotive.

Bunny is not as uptempo and optimistic as the punk-adjacent guitar pop that put them on the map; instead it basks in its afterglow, as if spending the morning in bed after a long night out.

If Bunny has a fault, it is in the way it is so poised and delicately produced that it sometimes sounds like it should be behind glass. Ultimately, though, it succeeds at the none-too-easy task of providing plenty of familiar pleasures in the present while making one curious about where Payseur might take Beach Fossils in the future.

Bunny deserves credit, like each Beach Fossils album, for challenging an aspect of Payseur’s process, even if it was less effective this time around.

It was very easy for me to enjoy this and, in a way, there is something fresh about this indie/dream rock that it doesn't precisely sound flat, only just a little too smooth at the end, but other than that, there is a completely friendly and comfortable project right here. Fresh and careful enough to be very exciting song by song. Full Review »
