It’s obvious he’s at the fore of UK rap. Lyrically, this LP hits the same themes as on his breakout 2015 mixtape.

Live up to the hype? The short answer is ‘yes.’ The slightly longer answer is ‘yes, but not as you’d expect it to.’ Funnily enough, the record packs something of a slow burn effect.

What J Hus has over all else this year is an ebullient ironic pseudo-oblivious pomp, the kind of breathless mongrel music you’ll only ever get from folk young enough to miss how vital it is they’re breaking all the rules. [Jul 2017, p.62]

This is very much a post-Stormzy, post-Skepta, post-Drake-going-roadman album, and an important stepping stone along the path to the UK establishing itself as a bona fide world-beater at beats and rhymes.

What it reveals is someone of talent, ambition, and enough wit and self-awareness to keep that ambition grounded in reality. It’s an excellent debut from an artist on the cusp.

Only "Friendly," another lightweight track recorded a few years back, makes Common Sense end with a question mark. ... With only one mixtape and one album J Hus has been able to enter the top ten in a competitive market, and Common Sense shows why, hitting the right notes with its expert composition and overall emotive quality.
