Concrete Desert is a response to a real environment. But the album feels less specific to a given city. It seems instead like a parallel space, one that builds an impression of some future dystopia.

The merging of the two artists’ sounds feels entirely natural.

Evilly powerful, filmic and flowing. [Jun 2017, p.88]

To call Concrete Desert “exciting” would be a stretch even by those who love what it has to offer. It does offer plenty, though, especially if the near-flawless setting and maintaining of a mood are of interest. This is difficult, oppressive music, full of sounds that would rather suffocate than eviscerate.

Concrete Desert is not intended to fade away and become background music or some meaningless soundscape. Rather, it's a captivating effort that leaves the listener exhausted, but ready to spiral again.

The pair share an uncanny symbiosis, which is quite clearly demonstrated on Concrete Desert.

It’s neo-neo-noir music that draws you into its discomfort. If its vast expanses leave listeners vulnerable, at least there’s more space to let yourself roam.

The album is ultimately defined by its ten minute centrepiece “American Dream” and the 14 minute closing title track. Both beatless, these two are painted in broad, expansive strokes by Martin and further shaded by some of the most mystifying motifs of Carlson’s career to date. [Apr 2017, p.49]

Concrete Desert is a potent blend of cinematic music-for-outsiders and deep, drone-leaning sounds.

    Concrete Desert is a seductive set-piece. [Jun 2017, p.24]

Concrete Desert may--for some listeners--be missing an excavation of the dark musical hearts of each of these two fine musicians, but what it offers instead is something tangibly unique in the catalogues of two legendary figures.

Concrete Desert is far from relaxing, but chances are you already gathered that. While it is effective, at nearly 70 minutes, it's better digested in small doses to better distinguish the multiplicity of textural, dynamic, and sonic strategies at work in individual pieces.
