He never pushes too hard, yet he has a light touch, so he sounds as comfortable sliding into a wall of digital sound as he does singing with just an acoustic guitar or two. This gift justifies the considerable length of Dangerous: The Double Album as all the sheer variety proves Wallen can indeed convincingly sing just about any modern country style.

Amid the dozens of songs on “Dangerous,” there’s ample room for variety. Wallen offers fingerpicking and soft-rock country with “Somebody’s Problem” and “7 Summers,” intricately layered Eagles-style country-rock with “More Surprised Than Me” and “Your Bartender,” a Southern-rock stomp with “Beer Don’t.” ... A stretch of songs during the album’s second half, with titles like “Rednecks, Red Letters, Red Dirt,” “Somethin’ Country” and “Whatcha Think of Country Now,” grow heavy-handed. But every so often, he allows for other possibilities.

Though Wallen’s idea was to split the album according to theme, things aren’t quite as delineated as that. Even at his most boisterous, Wallen is given to introspection, and he can make the straightest love song gnarly.

Dangerous is most affecting when Wallen’s husky, emotive voice does the heavy lifting. ... The flaws of Dangerous, apart from being 17 songs too long, is that Wallen does not always seem up to the heavy task of pumping fresh life into well-worn topics.

Overall, most of these songs are absolute smash hits. If you are looking for trendy catchy country songs this would be the album for you. ThisOverall, most of these songs are absolute smash hits. If you are looking for trendy catchy country songs this would be the album for you. This is as close as you can get to an album that has one of everything talking about girls, heartbreak, party, and drinking, to everyday problems. While there is no bad songs on this album, most of the songs are very basic country songs talking about trucks and heartbreak. Nothing revolutionary is happening here just a lot of the same type of vibe that country has set for the past two decades. Wallen goes a little out of his range in some songs stretching his to limits for some songs while others are in his wheelhouse. Country songs that are slower and lyrics where he can belt are his wheelhouse. Songs that are more upbeat with a little bit of pop mixed are not so much. Full Review »
