The power of Wand may not be pleasant, but its pandemic of virulent noise may well become the itch you can't scratch.

In August 2014, Los Angeles trio Wand released debut ‘Ganglion Reef’, a psychedelic record inspired by a make-believe island. They’ve maintained that imaginative approach for follow-up Golem, which is full of brain-bending riffs, effects and abstract lyrics.

It's a trip, a varied one with heavy/light and ugly/beautiful balances in perfect moderation.

As with most psychedelic rock, Golem has a penchant for wandering and is probably best enjoyed stoned. But Wand is quickly growing into a band that can take a musical trip and still land squarely on its feet.

It’s very difficult to do anything new in psych but with their energy and enthusiasm, not to mention some interesting work with electronics, Wand have managed to bring a surprisingly entertaining offering to the genre.

Their new sound might scare off some of the psych lovers who dug their debut, but for anyone looking for some weird heavy rock noise, Golem fits the bill.

Golem works best when Wand finds a way to split the difference via proto-prog face peelers like "Cave In" or the Hawkwind-like "Planet Golem" where the sweet and acrid combine to make something particularly intoxicating. [Apr 2015, p.94]

Wand excels at delivering heavy and murky sounds, but they're a bit late to a conversation that their peers have already dominated.

Golem is another epic, apocalyptic wasteland where the riff is king. [Apr - May 2015, p.89]
