‘Happier Than Ever’, then, is not just a triumph in progressing a signature sound into new territories, but a lesson in how to own your reality with confidence and class.

It’s an album that feels more intimate than the first one, and the first one was pretty intimate. ... It’s a fabulous headphones record.

Billie Eilish’s second album expands upon everything that worked the last time and pushes it in new directions, a creative muse restless and bold in its ambition. It may not always land, but this is a terrific release that proves Eilish’s staying power, demonstrating she’s more than up to the task of delivering on the promise of her debut.

The album also nudges Eilish beyond the trip-hop and trap sounds that dominated her past work, resulting in a more sonically diverse set that allows the singer—whose downbeat vocals have often been compared to Lorde’s—to explore the more textured, melodic aspects of her voice.

We relate because we root for her, because we listen with affection and identification. We’d all rather see her in a crown, running this nothing town. But the most striking thing about Happier Than Ever is that she’s refusing to coddle her audience, refusing to protect us from her darkest moments. It’s a high-risk move.

Patiently moving into a new era, ‘Happier Than Ever’ is shrouded in a transformative darkness.

On Happier Than Ever the tempo never quite reaches fever pitch; instead, Eilish is content with the tranquillity of tried and tested methods - tentatively pushing boundaries, rather than cranking the distortion up to 10.

The artist left the dreamlike universe of her previous album and, with her eyes open, she sang about real life. Happier Than Ever is one of the year's bravest records. Billie gives herself in flesh and blood as she sings with surprising and stimulating vocals. If you don't remember what it's like to be in post-adolescence, listen to this record. Expand

I thought Billie had shown us all everything at her debut album and I also remember saying that her second one wouldn't be as good. I guess II thought Billie had shown us all everything at her debut album and I also remember saying that her second one wouldn't be as good. I guess I was right... it's not as good, it's better; way better for the record. Billie really brings everything into this album, I don't even know how to explain. But one thing is very clear throughout this masterpiece: the growth. You can tell by miles away how much she has improved herself musically, artistically and as a person as well; although she was pretty mature for her age at the last album (as you can notice even with a shallow listen), in this one she brings the deepness to another level, the introspection and self analysis is precise. "Happier Than Ever" by Billie Eilish is a true piece of modern art. Expand

Halley's comet, Billie Bossa Nova, Oxytocin, NDA, Happier Than Ever and Male Fantasy were the true highlights of the record to me. While I enjoyed every single track in here I still think Overheated was a bit of a let down because even with its somewhat comforting atmosphere I still found myself a bit annoyed by the production which was undercooked and uninspired for me. Nevertheless, her vocals and the instrumental saved the song in my view. The classic old glamour/jazzy style suits her very well btw. I'm really curious about what she's going to do next and really appreciate the fact that she didn't try to imitate the sound of her first album which was one of my favourite of 2019. Expand

Don't get me wrong, I'm a sucker for a slowly flowing sad ballad-filled album, but this one is just a yawn-squeezer for me, as well as LDR's most recent one. I understand it is supposed to be personal and is infused with Billie's traumatic experiences from past relationships, I just didn't find any song captivating enough to add to my library. Also on some songs the space between you and Billie's voice is so close it's almost uncomfortable, because of that I assume many people are going to say that Billie couldn't sing, only whisper. The production on some tracks is truly stunning, beautiful and futuristic. But for the most part this album is just subpar. My opinion, you know? Expand
