The fact that Cohen is nearer to the Pennines than he is to Portland shines through, though, with a dry wit tempering the sunniest songs. [Sep 2012, p.105]

"Milk Maid are great!" Shout it from a rooftop.

At its core, Mostly No prioritizes songcraft above bare texture, and Cohen's willingness to temper eruption with meditation sets Milk Maid apart from many of its buzzy peers.

Not every song is a keeper, but the strong songs carry the less-engaging moments and Mostly No ultimately becomes a drifty summer soundtrack.

If Mostly No lacks genuine innovation, the album more than compensates with a radiating glow of veneration.

Cohen is clearly making the music he wants in the way he wants, but Milk Maid are releasing it into a world containing countless similar items old and new. [That have been influenced by 90's American lo-fi]. This needn't necessarily matter, but for many might mean the difference between a diverting record and an essential one.

As far as bringing the goods on a sophomore release goes, well, the answer is mostly yeah.
  8. It isn't long before their second album goes sour, settling into a pattern of either doctrinaire psych-rock or alt-country which recalls the Dandy Warhols in their more meandering moods.

Mostly No [is] an album with good intentions but one that's flawed in its execution.

Mostly No's sound is a pretty familiar one – the Jesus and Mary Chain loom large in particular – which does burst into bloom here and there... but there's also a sense of pedals unstamped-on and wigs unflipped that makes you wonder if it could all have gone further.

There are many excellent, surfy noise rock albums that eclipse Mostly No, but Cohen's laid-back vocals and howling guitar are enough to merit at least a listen.
