On Sept. 5, dvsn establish themselves as the cutting edge of post-millennial soul music, electrifying, absorbing and, at their best, downright mind-blowing.

This group is wise and capable enough to eschew nearly every shortcut of today's personality-first music culture and dial into the silence between the noise. It's what confidence sounds like.

Refreshingly, they're not only about slick production atmospherics, though some cavernous sonics and electro rhythms threaten to steal the show around the album's midpoint.

Despite some glaring issues, Sept. 5th manages to stay listenable, and offers occasional glimpses of genuine inspiration.

Apart from the relatively lively pulse of the aching "Another One," everything plays out at slow-jam tempo, and the vocals often slip into falsetto mode with lapses in enunciation. The duo is at their most effective on finale "The Line," a bare, subtly churchified pleader.

As a whole, it eschews the current R&B trend of existing within multiple genres or creating a genre unto itself, and the collection is unengaging because of it.

Extremely impressed with this album, nineteen85 and Daniel Daley really come through on it. It's old school R & B with a very cool modern twist, I prefer this to Views to be completely honest, thus album is actually very underrated as well. The production is so nightly, some real night mood type stuff, very sensual, and very Toronto. Expand

One of the best R&B albums I've heard to this date. Silence is the greatest power that is highlighted by this album.

However I did not expect much from this but still got a bit disappointed. Boredom grows more and more as the 46-minute project goes on and on. There are some original moves like the electro-style sounds and singing parts but this get totally erased by generic R&B lyrics and production. The two longest tracks 'With Me' and 'The Line' certainly do create an immersive atmosphere but there is actually nothing really exciting about it. This truly seems effortless for the duo. Expand
