  • Summary: This is the sophomore disc for the Texas five-piece featuring former Bedhead co-founders (and current brothers) Matt and Bubba Kadane. The album was recorded in Chicago with Steve Albini.
Score distribution:
  1. Positive: 11 out of 13
  2. Negative: 0 out of 13
  1. Their music is an amazing nexus where surgical precision, ace musicianship, and thrifty minimalism intertwine joyously.
  2. Alternative Press
    80
Delivers huge hooks, metronomic riffs and driving drumbeats, all of which enhance the Kadanes' amplified whispers. [Aug 2004, p.108]
  3. The Wire
    80
The Kadanes have created a collection of songs of which they can be proud. [#246, p.62]
  4. The End is Near employs much of fans found so pleasant about Bedhead, particularly the impressive build-up of two and three bar melodies.
  5. The New Year here occasionally let loose with a decidedly unreserved frenzy that is a joy to hear.
  6. This is one of the more straightforward and brutal assessments of people and relationships that I've heard in awhile, all set to vaguely dreary music that is pretty impeccable in construction.
  7. On The End is Near, the group seems to follow the same pattern as before, but with less than appetizing results.
