Throughout Unlimited Love, you can still hear their enthusiasm breathing life into these tracks: when Flea, Frusciante, and Smith really lock in on a groove, they’re indestructible.

‘Unlimited Love’ is exactly what it says on the tin. A celebration of union, friendship, and life, all manifested across 17 tracks. Littered with lyrical easter eggs and distinctive Chili Peppers funky flare, this record is a regal return.

It is this balance of experimentalism and familiarity, of the tentative and the trusted, that makes “Unlimited Love” utterly unstoppable and unlike anything you’re likely to hear this year.

The sound is lean and clean, sharply separated with individual instrumentation shining through and not a lot of over-dubbing or effects.

The result is vintage RHCP: a jammy, melodic effort that blends the wavy reflections of their 1999 triumph, Californication, with the expansive rock of Stadium Aracadium.

On their 12th album, Red Hot Chili Peppers not only get comfortable with their own impressive legacy, but prove there’s plenty more to come.

Casual fans may be disappointed by the lack of hooks until they’ve heard it another twenty times, while hardcore fans will slowly discover there’s a musical depth the Peppers have long been striving for. The bulk of the album blends into its own flavor, and it’s a good one. Unlimited Love doesn’t do it all, but what it does, it does damn well.

While this old dog isn’t learning any new tricks, the band’s unmistakable chemistry shines, and each note is a glimpse into a youthful energy that hasn’t been seen in quite some time.

Unlimited Love is a decidedly low-key affair, not concerned about competing with the band’s past greatness, but rather more focused on the simple joys of being in the same room jamming together again.

The Chilis are back together, having fun. And it feels good. [May 2022, p.80]

The band's albums with outgoing guitarist Josh Klinghoffer weren't bad, exactly — The Getaway in particular holds up quite nicely — but, when listening to Unlimited Love, there's a strong sense of everything falling into place and order being restored.

Despite the overall trippy and feel-good nature of the set, there's enough for fans of any past era to find an entry point and enjoy the ride.

Unlimited Love is competent and comforting—its creators rarely try to grab your attention but never totally embarrass themselves either. (Well, maybe a little during the rap verses in “Poster Child.”)

From beginning to end, the album just flows and is chock full of surprises. After a first listen, I'd describe this as "Californication" meets "By the Way" and "Stadium Arcadium". So glad that John is back in the band. Looking forward to future albums from this powerhouse of a band! A+++ Full Review »

If you are listening to this and like it PLEASE tell me how. There are moments of relatively interesting instrumental parts but Anthony Keidis absolutely destroys any hope of anything remotely exciting happening on this. IT is so long, so uninspired and boring. What is good about this?! please help me understand why people are giving this anything above 2/10 i just don't get it. I used to be an enormous RHCP fan but this is a 50 year old saying dumb ass rhymes, out of key. Useless vocalist with zero musical ability. John, Flea and Chad are massively talented musicians who must be getting paid very well to phone it in this badly and put out a 17 track album of pure filler.... Full Review »
