You Belong There is a genuinely transporting, multi-dimensional song cycle and a glimpse into a fascinating musical mind that demands repeated plays. It’s destined to appear on album of the year lists but its depth and sense of ambition will ensure its treasures last well beyond 2022.

You Belong There is an album rich in moments of beauty and wisdom, even as it confesses that there are no easy answers. [May 2022, p.18]

The debut solo album is as ornate as 2009's Veckatimest, with Rossen now playing almost all the buccaneering acoustic guitars, cascading piano lines, cellos and woodwinds himself. [May 2022, p.94]

Rather than a move away from the indelible contributions he made to Grizzly Bear as a central songwriter, here he pulls apart his innate tendencies and impulses, finding yet further beauty in the perpetual change of his lived-in environment.

In the past, Rossen has tended toward cryptic minimalism, but emotional honesty suits him. The warmth of his voice counterbalances the darker moments he recounts.

The album is riddled with pretty hooks that are buried under interesting complexities.

This album is striking in its complexity despite it being completely organic in terms of instrumentation. We're talking simple guitars, percussion and wind instruments but at times it sounds like a classical orchestra backed album. This is proper, high functioning music in the vein of "Astral Weeks". That said, unlike that aforementioned album which maintains its brilliance throughout, "You Belong There" is an album with some exceptional moments but often the material is more impressive than necessarily magical. Daniel Rossen is an obvious talent and fans of Grizzly Bear will like this. Expand
