1973: Whatever Happened to the Teenage Dream?

1973: Whatever Happened to the Teenage Dream? - T. Rex

May 26, 2023
After the thrilling rush of 1972, during which [RoviLink="MN"]Marc Bolan[/RoviLink] and [RoviLink="MN"]T. Rex[/RoviLink] ruled the musical world with a glittery fist, 1973 proved a different kind of year. Tired of glam and looking for a new sound, [RoviLink="MN"]Bolan[/RoviLink] turned to the sounds of America for inspiration. Determined to become a star there, he led the band on a number of tours and along the way understood that fans wanted harder and less poppy music; he also fell in love with the soul and funk beaming out over the nation's airwaves. [RoviLink="MW"]1973: Whatever Happened to the Teenage Dream?[/RoviLink] is a four-disc set that captures what happened when [RoviLink="MN"]Bolan[/RoviLink] and the band turned away from glam and went in search of something else. It contains both the [RoviLink="MW"]Tanx[/RoviLink] album, which was recorded in late 1972, and 1974's [RoviLink="MW"]Zinc Alloy and the Hidden Riders of Tomorrow[/RoviLink], recorded in 1973. Alongside them are non-LP singles, demos [RoviLink="MN"]Bolan[/RoviLink] made at home, [RoviLink="MW"]Zinc Alloy[/RoviLink] outtakes, the 1973 single credited to [RoviLink="MN"]Big Carrot[/RoviLink], and the aborted sessions for a [RoviLink="MN"]Sister Pat Hall[/RoviLink] record. Neither of the two studio albums were huge leaps away from the template already established by the band; the changes were small but significant. On [RoviLink="MW"]Tanx[/RoviLink], some elements of harder rock like slide guitar, straightforward songcraft, and simpler lyrics are implemented, but at the same time [RoviLink="MN"]Tony Visconti[/RoviLink]'s production often sends the album into the cosmos, especially when the phasers kick in and the backing vocals levitate. [RoviLink="MW"]Zinc Alloy[/RoviLink] adds the intense backing vocals of [RoviLink="MN"]Gloria Jones[/RoviLink] and [RoviLink="MN"]Pat Hall[/RoviLink], swings a bit more loosely, and even gets funky on a few tracks. Any [RoviLink="MN"]T. Rex[/RoviLink] fan wouldn't be shocked by the small alterations, though, and both [RoviLink="MN"]Bolan[/RoviLink]'s strut and sadness are amplified in interesting ways. It's often seen as a transitional period in the group's career, and some prefer to focus on the brilliant non-LP singles like "Children of the Revolution" and "20th Century Boy," but to ignore [RoviLink="MW"]Tanx[/RoviLink] and [RoviLink="MW"]Zinc Alloy[/RoviLink] in favor of earlier or later work is ill-advised and would mean missing out on some strange and wonderful music. The demos and outtakes have all been released before, and they are uniformly brilliant, proving that [RoviLink="MN"]Bolan[/RoviLink] didn't need glitter or volume to get across the genius contained in his melodies and words. The [RoviLink="MN"]Big Carrot[/RoviLink] single is a gas, with the rollicking "Black Jack" letting [RoviLink="MN"]Jones[/RoviLink] and [RoviLink="MN"]Hall[/RoviLink] take the lead and "Squint Eye Mangle" showing off [RoviLink="MN"]Bolan[/RoviLink]'s guitar heroics in joyously ramshackle fashion. The [RoviLink="MN"]Sister Pat Hall[/RoviLink] album is a nice addition to the set, and while her voice can get a little strident at times, it's fun to hear [RoviLink="MN"]Bolan[/RoviLink] give the [RoviLink="MN"]T. Rex[/RoviLink] sound a funky twist. Like the [RoviLink="MW"]1972[/RoviLink] set that preceded it, there are no real rarities here, but the comprehensive view it gives to a year that was difficult, yet triumphant in its own way, is something that is of use to any [RoviLink="MN"]T. Rex[/RoviLink] fan, be they obsessive or new. ~ Tim Sendra

Dangerous And Moving

Dangerous And Moving - T.A.T.U

October 11, 2005
Three years after their sensational debut (and we don't use that adjective in the way that means "outstanding"), it turns out that they aren't schoolgirls, and they aren't lesbians. But what the Russian duo does have on this second album is Sting. Now that's edgy!

NVM

NVM - Tacocat

February 25, 2014
Tacocat's album, NVM, is a charming little punky pop record full of sweet love songs, fun life songs, and slightly serious songs about female troubles and drugs. Clocking in at just under 30 minutes, the 13 songs happily bop past in an easygoing clatter of spiky guitars and sweet harmonies that will likely bring a smile to the face of anyone who likes good-time indie pop. Thanks to Conrad Uno's tight production and the ultra-hooky nature of the songs, you can definitely hear some Fastbacks in Tacocat's DNA. (A little bit of Tullycraft on one end of the indie spectrum, with just a hint of Weezer on the other too.) No heavy metal guitar solos, but no amateur-sounding noise either. Emily Nokes takes most of the lead vocals, but everyone else seems to chip in with harmonies, and guitarist Eric Randall gets a chance to step to the front on "Alien Girl." When the songs and performances really come together, like on "Snow Day" or the jumping-bean peppy "Stereogram," Tacocat sound like the funnest band around. Like a low-rent Josie & the Pussycats or the kind of outfit you wish your friends had started in high school instead of a crummy Sublime cover band. Even when the songs are a little weaker or when they come off unconvincingly angry ("Pocketful of Primrose"), it still sounds good. NVM may not be exploring new ground and Tacocat isn't going to surprise anyone here, but if you're looking for a half-an-hour full of snapping bubblegum hooks, light-hearted good times, and perky guitar pop, you've found something good here. ~ Tim Sendra
